[livejournal.com profile] tvrealm had a challenge where we were to explore TV Tropes either by show or by trope. They foolishly allowed meta, so I am doing that! Since Supernatural is tending to occupy my wheelhouse lately, I'm meta-ing about tropes found on the show.

Genre Savvy
A Genre Savvy character doesn't necessarily know they're in a story, but they do know of stories like their own and what worked in them and what didn't. More sophisicated versions will also know they can't tell which genre they are in (and are often in far more realistic or complicated genres that the stories they remember), or which characters they are.

Self-awareness is a bitch )

Aliens in Cardiff

Looking for a place to set the disaster of the week/alien invasion/supervillain's base/origin of the bad guys etc? . . . Have the center of the plot be in an actual place, but some relatively harmless semi-known non-exotic location which makes you ask "Why THERE, of all places?" Or in the case of Supernatural, have it take place in some completely unknown non-exotic location... for example, Gleason, WI.

Are you sure that's a real place? )

I have many thoughts (thinky meta-type thoughts) on this season of SPN, but I thought I'd better write up my opinion on what's up with Sam before the show comes along and gives it's explanation. I'm prepared to be invalidated, but the show hasn't disappointed me even when it doesn't do what I want it to. Need I warn you that this is long?

First of all let me state that I really want Sam to be Sam. )

I realize this is a lot to ask from a television show. But I'll be happy if they just address a part of it. If it's the background theme to the overall story arc and MOTW that appears, like Free Will was last season. I'm usually happier when a show doesn't explain it all because I'd rather fill in the missing bits than have to deal with something that I feel doesn't work. So far the show hasn't let me down.

I discovered today, quite by accident, that Supernatural has replaced "24" as my must watch show. I was helping Myr with her school work and I said "Well, how 'bout you take a break at 8:30 and we can watch the DVR of 24." Then I paused and said "Wait. I mean Supernatural!"

I don't need validation (so I keep telling myself) but it's nice to get it.

I won a fic challenge over at [livejournal.com profile] xoverland! Whoo-hoo me!

The challenge was to write a 600 word fic with a one of the shows being an FBI show. I wrote a short Bones/Supernatural crossover.

I have always wanted to have a fic where Booth and Dean bond over pie. This is not that fic. I set out to write that fic. Only as soon as I started out with Booth's point of view and the boys walked in... it wasn't that fic any more.

There is a larger story behind this little story. That one may be written some day, but this fic can stand on it's own.

I did this list for a crossover discussion on [livejournal.com profile] spnroundtable. I thought I'd post it here because they are all good stories.

Keep in mind who I am. These are gen stories that stick close to canon (mostly) and are all about the characterizations. Since romance and porn usually bore me, I'm not going to recommend them. Crossovers do tend to be AU-ish, but the ones that go massively off track are labeled as such.

[livejournal.com profile] jujuberry136 has two SPM/CM fics: The Time Has Come to Be Gone and When You are Done. They are both set more in the Supernatural world than in the Criminal Minds one -- although I really like how she merged the two in the sequel. Some of the things in the plot are AU enough make my canon-obsessed self squirm, but it's done so damn well that it doesn't distract from my enjoyment of the fics. The characterizations are amazing and she manages to make all the characters smart and valuable, something that is almost impossible when dealing with a crossover that has some many characters.

[livejournal.com profile] art_savage wrote This Bitter Earth which is my favorite CM/SPN crossover to date. It's more Dean than Sam and she limits the number of CM people involved but, IMHO, it makes for a solid story that way. I hold out hope for a sequel. The very best thing about this fic is the wonderful characterization of Dean and of the boy's relationship at the end of season four. Dead on, but yet not completely lacking warmth and love.

Off LJ, kikkimax has two fics Defect and it's sequel Hell, and Back. Set after season two they are AU. I enjoyed the first one but in all honesty, I haven't read the sequel because it was so very AU. Remember, though, that my not reading the fic had nothing to do with the quality of the fic, but rather my inability to remove my canon blinders. I enjoyed the characterization in "Defect" and really liked how she used all the characters and her plot to get Dean out of his "deal with the devil". I also need to point out that I really don't like Gideon, but this fic made me forget that.

Over on ff.net, I like Hunters and Prey/Facade by PaBurke. It's short but good. Once again it's well-written enough for me to like Gideon. I really think she captures the difficulties the CM team would have if they would run to the Winchester brothers. Not in profiling them, but in dealing with the unknown that they are.

While searching for links for these recs, I also ran across a crossover by [livejournal.com profile] buffyaddict13 called Haunted Minds. I haven't read it, so I can't exactly recommend it, but I plan on reading it and thought I'd share. ETA: This fic is a WIP. Sorry 'bout that. It is a wonderfully well written WIP, a tad more emo than I usually go for but well-written enough to keep me going. It's heavily Reid-centric, but (IMO) keeps him in character. I feel the need to point out that, without an ending I just can't call it a "rec" because the ending will determine if I would ever read it a second time and wanting to reread a fic is paramount to me reccing it.

Added via a comment: [livejournal.com profile] baylorsr gives us Redux. Because of the type of fic it is, I'm only giving you her tease: "A Criminal Minds AU gen crossover. Takes place after 1.22, Devil’s Trap, immediately following the car accident. Agent Hotchner has been wanting to meet the Winchester family for a long time." It was well done and despite my dislike of AU fics, I will add my recommendation.

Added via [livejournal.com profile] kuroaloeart: [livejournal.com profile] lilaeth wrote Eat It, Twilight. It's a long piece (written for a big bang, I think) set in the fifth season of both shows. It takes a fairly harsh view of Twilight fans (or teenaged girls), but it's got the characterizations down pretty good. Fair warning: This is set between "Good God, Y'all" and "Free to be You and Me" and has all the issues that the boys had then.

I think that covers it. Hope you like them.

Oh... if you know of one that's not listed here, let me know. I've also ran across several NCIS and Numb3rs crossovers. I will share them at some future point.

I have several meta thoughts on Supernatural that I really should write up and post. In all honestly, I'm hesitant to do so because my view of the show is so very different than those that others are posting.

I do that a lot. I'm equal parts coward and narcissist. While I like debate and discussion, I also like the feeling of getting along and being liked. I've always erred on the side of "It's better to be silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." Of course, what good is an opinion if its never expressed. Lately, I've started to think that being thought a fool for nothing is much worse than being being called a fool for something that you actually do.

That in mind, my Supernatural thoughts for tonight: )

I came into SPN late and just hang at the edges of the fandom. I think that has a lot to do with my continued love for the show and my tolerance for the current plots and characters developments. Keeping in mind that I'm an unapologetic canon-whore, I'll also admit to being lucky in that most of how I see the characters is reflected in the way the show is currently going. Although, I've always felt there's meta in how being active in fandom effects how one views the show. That's a dicey and easily controversial meta, though. I also have meta on retconning and more thoughts on free will and coping mechanisms. Even though those are less dangerous metas, I'm not sure they'll ever get posted.

Meanwhile, I'll just enjoy the show because it hasn't disappointed me yet.

I enjoyed the most recent episode of Supernatural, but then it reminded me so strongly of Bimbos of the Death Sun I was bound to like it. Besides I've been to (and loved) conventions like that, it was kind of like old home week.

However, the reactions to this episode have once again demonstrated one thing to me: It's apparent I lack a gender-identification gene. But then I've done the whole self-meta thing in the past about how I don't view female characters in the same way as others do, so I'll just chalk it up to the fact I rarely think like anyone else. And that, quite possibly, I'm not a girl at all. *grin*

I thought there was some good meta in the episode but then I can find meta in any episode. However, since I found a wonderful meta on being a fan and being a hero by [livejournal.com profile] fannishliss called "Fannishness and Being the Hero" I will just defer to her greatness. Instead I'll just post my happy *glee*ness. There is meta in my head, but that will have to wait.

I’ve committed fic. Now I haven’t written anything in almost two years. I used to have a feel for my writing. It used to be that I could tell if something was good or if it wasn’t worth crap. I don’t have that anymore.

So I am posting this here, as a test run. It’s totally not my usual writing, which may be why I can’t judge its quality. I do, however, value the opinion of my flist, so I’m throwing it out to you. I used to play poker quite a bit. Not the high-stakes stuff that's popular now (and not strip, either!), but sit-around-the-table, playing-for-quarters dealer’s choice type poker. I've never been good at counting cards, but I'm aware of the odds and I know the basic mechanics of all the games. I've never won big, but I've never lost big, either. If I'm at a casino I play blackjack. With blackjack, if you play the odds and have a good feel for how the deck is turning, you can come out ahead. Blackjack luck tends to run in streaks -- the deck is hot or cold and if you can tailor your bets, you can make it work in your favor.

Texas Hold 'em is very popular right now, and part of the reason it's popular is because it doesn't work that way. Texas Hold 'em turns on luck more than any other game and because the last card (the river) can make a winning hand out of a complete mess. It's a game where playing foolishly is rewarded more often than other games. Because of that it also encourages people to play more foolishly than they normally would.

When you are playing for fun or for low stakes this can make the game irritating and hard to predict. When you are playing for high stakes against professionals, it can make the game all about how well you can read or manipulate the other players.

Which brings me to last week’s SPN episode )

Just a short thought before the soon to be awesomeness of tonight’s episode.
partly: (Dean)
A philosophy near and dear to my heart – and an integral building block of who I am – is concept of free will. More than anything else it is our choices that define us. And the choices that define us the most are those that are made when it appears we actually have no choice. The concept of free will has its most power in face of the capriciousness of fate or destiny or whatever it is that people are calling the uncontrollable circumstances of life. Even if we can’t choose the path we are on, we can choose how we go down that path.

One of the reasons I love “Supernatural” so much is that it’s all about free will. I know that there are a lot of shows that bandy about the concept of free will. Usually it’s presented as coming-of-age marker or a pseudo-anarchist “screw the establishment” mantra that firmly entrenches our hero as “different”. But instead of just tossing out free will in an “us or them”, fork-in-the-road, “left or right”, or a "do/don't do as you're told" simplicity, Supernatural focuses on the true complexity – the power, the cost, the unpredictability and the necessity – of free will.

Only partially about Supernatural, no knowledge of the show needed. )

I’ve always believed that it is more important to teach people how to think rather than what to think. It’s how I’ve attempted to raise my child. It is, however, a scary and dangerous thing. Our differing choices of free will could lead us to stand alone and against those we care about. This, again, is something that Supernatural does so well, especially in the last season with the schism that developed between Sam and Dean. People often like to take sides and place blame, as if life is a zero sum game that has a perfect solution that eliminates all the errors and pain. But you can’t. Free will demands that there are errors and pain. In the end, that’s what freedom is. As Dean told Castiel in “Lucifer Rising”: “I'll take the pain and the guilt. I'll even take Sam as is. It's a lot better than being some Stepford bitch in paradise.”

Granted, our lives rarely (fortunately) have such grand, obvious examples of free will. We rarely get to make grand stands for life and right and good. But I think that all of us, somewhere deep down, want to be able to make that choice. To fight a worthy battle, to choose our own path and to say, “If there is anything worth dying for... this is it.” After all, it’s our choices that makes us truly alive, isn’t it?

Some quick thoughts before tonight's new Supernatural episode. For the record, this covers more than last weeks show.

Dean continues to be afraid of everything he investigates. He continues to show fear in equal part with defiance when he faces down the demons or angels or mob of Crotes. This is my favorite Dean trait. Well, one of them.

Lucifer in Sam? Unbelievable. Jared Padalecki continually amazes me. The changes in character and style from first season to this? Incredible.

I love the fact that Dean wants to make change with his relationship with Sam, but I don't think he has any idea on how to change. Dean has only ever been one thing all his life, he has no clue on how to be different. I don't think Dean has ever been anything other than Dean (short stint as brain washed office-drone not withstanding).

Castiel continues to rock. He is totally and completely awesome. Even drugged out, faithless future Cass was wonderful (albeit painful).

The end of last week's "Soon" preview with Sam channeling Horatio Caine? Heh. That so kills me. See my above point on the awesomeness of Jared.

I adore the writing in this show. The fact that Dean completely regressed to season 1 and 2 behavior -- leaving all the research to Sam, hitting on the girls and drinking while Sam worked, laying down the "I'm oldest and we'll do what I say" law-of-Dean -- is dead-on in character. It goes back to my earlier point of Dean not having a clue how to change, even though he knows he has to.

"Who would have thought killing Lilith would've been a bad thing?" THANK YOU! It's about time this was pointed out. It's about time they moved beyond blame. The guys are just pawns in a grand chess game and it's about time they realized that you can't be responsible for things you know nothing about and have no control over.

I still am in need of Supernatural iconage.
partly: (Fighting)
Shortly after the season of Supernatural aired, thought I'd give it a try, so I settled in to watch. We made it to the episode with the completely creepy scarecrow god, at which point Myr informed me that the show was just too spooky to watch. As she was only 11 at the time, I think that was a good decision.

Short version: I'm watching it now )

Not having the money to go out and buy all the seasons of Supernatural, I checked at my local video store and discovered that they have all the seasons. *glee* Even more *glee* is knowing that I can rent an entire season for five days for only $3. Actually, I got the first season free and the second season at half price because I haven't rented anything in a while. I officially love my video store.

So I've been playing catch up. Because Season one was out for two weeks, I actually watched season two before season one, but it's not breaking my brain too much.

I would say that the worst part of doing it this way is that I can't fangirl over the episodes with anyone because everyone has moved one, but I'm still slightly afraid of the SPN fandom. And, as you all know, I'm always somewhat sideways when it comes to fangirling.

Things I have to share (keeping in mind that I actually haven't seen all the eps):

  • The show is, IMHO, extremely psychologically accurate in how it portrays the characters. These are characters I know and recognize. Characters I love.

  • Both actors are completely adorable -- especially when they are doing little things (in character) while the focus is on other characters.

  • Dean is very often terrified of all the things he hunts. Sam considers the creatures dangerous and creepy, but Dean is actually afraid of them.

  • Sam changes the most over the series. Not only does he look different from S1 to S5, he actually moves differently. I would like to know if that is a conscious choice on the actor's part or just a growing familiarity with the things on show that comes over the years.

  • I have to remind myself that I need sleep because I would otherwise do nothing but catch up on this show.

  • Dean is one of the most insecure people on the face of the earth and while every single thing that ever attacked, fought or tortured him sees that immediately, none of his friends or family do.

  • I love the fact that often what is best for the individual character is at odds with what is best for the other characters or for the common good.

  • The music on this show is awesome cakes. As is the editing when music is involved.

  • My very favorite musical moment/scene – the end of “Nightshifter” The guys are making their escape from the bank in SWAT outfits and “Renegade” by Styx plays over the top. It rocks.

  • More than anything else, I want to write a crossover fic where Dean meets Garcia from Criminal Minds and they bond over cars.

  • A lot of Supernatural fandom still frightens me.
