RotK Trailer
*whimper*
It is going to be so good. And I see that TORN has already been asked to take down the links by New Line. They did the same thing last time and I missed it entirely. It is a trailer worth seeing.
I'm putting in an LJ cut so anyone who don't want to see, don't have to.
The opening really sets the mood, I think, with Pippin talking to Gandalf, asking if there is any hope for Sam and Frodo, then Gandalf replying it only ever was a "Fool's Hope". The rest of the trailer (like most of the movie, I would think) carries with that sense of hopelessness, of imminent defeat and failure. And it is a legitimate feeling of hopelessness, IMHO. None of the people involved really believe that it will work, after all. It was the longest of long shots. And. actually, since only what Frodo and Sam are doing will make a difference, all the rest are in an unwinnable battle. The closest the entire trailer comes to a hopeful scene is Merry telling Pippin that they would see the Shire again -- and even then I'm not really sure they actually believe it.
There are a lot of shots of battle and in most of the the good guys are massively out numbered. The siege machinery that the dark forces have is incredible; It will be stunning on a big screen. And they were right, Helm's Deep was nothing compared to the battles that are going to be in this movie.
There wasn't nearly enough of Sam and Frodo in it; although what there was was heartbreaking. Any identifiable scenes with them was in Shelob's Lair. Sam telling Frodo that Gollum is leading them into a trap and Frodo not seeing it. You can really see that Frodo is not connecting with reality and that Sam is desperate but still going to stick by Frodo no matter what. You get to see Gollum (in a wonderful scene where his is reflected in a pool of water) plotting to get rid of the Hobbits. You see Frodo wandering lost through Shelob's lair. There is one shot of Frodo that I'm sure comes later in the movie: he's completely covered and dirt and looks desperate and angry and lost... In other words, just like Frodo should look toward the end.
Merry and Pippin look great and tortured, but are in the trailer even less than Sam and Frodo. Legolas is only in it in the background and that is the closest we get to any elf. Denathor is also missing and there is only one scene with Faramir where he is saying "My Lord, Osgiliath has fallen" and he doesn't look like the person he's talking too is responding the way he wants. (Of course, since I know it is Denathor he is talking to and he isn't taking the news well, I feel confident that my interpretation is a good one.)
Theoden and Eowyn are in it and are just wonderful. Theoden is telling Eowyn he wants to see her smile again and not grieve for those who's time has come and that shot is immediately followed by Eowyn (in armor) holding a dying Theoden. That is going to be a great scene.
Gandalf is killer and is in a lot of shots. I just love Shadowfax standing off against the "fell beast". Gandalf is so very much the wizard WARRIOR in this movie. He rides up the stairs and through the fighting hordes and just looks damn good.
Not as good as Aragorn, mind you. A movie called "Return of the King" should have a lot of shots of the King, and this trailer does not disappoint. We get to see Aragorn looking kingly, Aragorn in his Gondorian Armor, Aragorn rallying the troops, Aragorn looking all distraught and anguished, Aragorn riding lead on the charge and Aragorn getting Narsil... He even has my favorite line of the trailer: "Ride for ruin and a world's ending." (OK... I'm pretty sure it's Aragorn who says it, I could be wrong, but even if I am, it is a great line.)
OK. Enough obsessing.
I would wish it here faster... but then I realize that this is the last movie. Oh sure, next year this time I can look forward to the DVD release and an extended DVD version of ROTK next December, but this is the last movie. I can't see another movie coming out that I will plan on going to see at Midnight. I think I will just enjoy all the anticipation I can for this one.
A little fangirl obsessiveness is good for the soul, I say.
