Social Commentary from a Twelve-Year-Old...

Myr was talking to me today and she said:

"Why is it the 'popular girls' never stand up and defend themselves when the boys are being jerks?"

Ah. Because the whole point of being a 'popular girl' is to make sure that you are popular. That's especially true where boys are concerned. So that means you have to put up with every jerk-like behavior they can come up with, just so you don't loose that popular label.

If you're trying to be popular you have to be sure not to annoy anyone. You can't be yourself unless that "self" turns out to be exactly what everyone else wants you to be.

I'm glad that Myr could see that. I'm really glad that thought bothers her.

If the popular girls had to defend themselves every time the boys were jerks... they'd do nothing but defend themselves until they joined the nunnery.
