Character Motivation and Plot

Rambling. I mean it. Just me babbling on about all the things that won't work in my fic.

In the fic, it is necessary for Jack to ditch his team and go on a mission alone. I don't want it to be a military assignment, because that's been done in Shades of Grey. Plus, even Hammond can't know about it. Yeah, that does tie into the bunny I got.

I'm toying with two possibilities: The NID or the Tok'ra.

I love the NID idea because then I would get to write Harry Maybourne and I so totally love Maybourne. Only, if I do that, it would end up being an on world fic and I really need it to be off world. I realize I wouldn't have to have Maybourne involved if the NID is, but where's the fun in that? Besides, I'm setting this in the middle of the fourth season, and the NID is basically world bound at that point. I swear I will work Maybourne into a fic someday.

OK. There wasn't really much hope for the NID to work in this, but I had to give them a chance.

The Tok'ra actually fit better in the plot mechanics I have set up and I could have Anise involved and torturing Jack with Anise is always a good idea. The Tok'ra was actually my first choice, only I run into one big problem: I can't think of a reason that Jack would work with them, much less do so without his team to back him up.

In order to convince him to do it, Anise would have to demonstrate that

1. Unless he did (whatever it is they want him to do), bad things would happen. Where the Tok'ra are concerned, it would have to be something bad too Earth or the SGC or SG personnel. The only Tok'ra I see Jack sticking his neck way out for is Jacob.
2. If he involves anyone in (whatever it is they want him to do), it will either not succeed or it will harm those he involves.

My problem? I have no idea what (whatever it is they want him to do) is.

Requirements:

Jack has to go off world. He has to do this without anyone knowing. This I have figured out.

Jack has to believe that this is close to a suicide mission. Well, maybe not exactly. He needs to go into this thinking that the odds are very much against him coming back to the SGC. The odds of a successful mission should be good, but success doesn't mean that he will get to return to the SGC. This will allow me to have scenes where he says 'farewell' to the team -- without them knowing it at the time.

Jack has to end up on a planet, wounded and alone. Absolutely no one will know were this planet is, including the Tok'ra. Jack will go to this planet on his own, by his own choice, so I don't need him kidnapped to get him there. I do need a better reason than I have for him choosing to go there. The antagonist can know where he is or it could be the bad guy's planet. But then the Tok'ra would know about it. I need a reason for Jack to feel he has to go there -- either to hide out or to do something. Once there, he doesn't think he's going to leave. It can't be Laira's planet, I'm not dealing with that and, besides, the SCG will look there once they start looking.

Needs:

GOOD reason for the Tok'ra to want Jack to do this mission.
GOOD mission for him to do with an interesting bad guy that can be mean to Jack.
GOOD reason for him to end up on the planet.

Haves:

A way to get Jack off world and one the mission without anyone knowing.
Scenes with him and team on base before he goes on the mission.
A way for the team to find out that Jack isn't where they thought he was.
A way for the team to find Jack on the planet and get him off.

I have the whole action and emotions down. I just need a better WHY.

Alright. Seriously rambling. Need to go to bed. Get up and write in the morning. I have several scenes that I can write without knowing the small little detail of why the hell it's all happening.

If I'm lucky. I'll dream up the answer.

Please ignore. I'm only posting it because it's part of my ten-step program to getting things done. One more thing to check off my to do list.
