Notes: I must thank my wonderful beta-readers [livejournal.com profile] finabair and [livejournal.com profile] amilyn. This fic wouldn't be half what it is without them, and any errors you find are mine that I put in without their knowledge or over their objections. All hail, JennJenn and Amy!

Jack routinely drops impossible tasks on Sam's shoulders and walks away. Sometimes it doesn't even seem that he cares enough to watch to see if she can pull it off. )

All in all, I'm not unhappy with the fic. I just keep thinking that a better way to do it would be to do a series of scenes with Carter playing pool. One from each season or so. That way her changes in attitude, confidence and friendships could be shown through her actions at the pool table: how she bets, how she views the people watching her, how the pool playing regulars treat her, how all that changes over the years. That scenario keeps getting in the way of me really liking this piece. Weird, but true. This one feels like to separate stories mashed together with one a weak connecting through line. I love bits of it, but I'm still not sure the whole thing works.

In the end, though, I like that I could write Carter at all, even in this short piece.

This was written for the SamCarter Ficathon over at [livejournal.com profile] samcarterfic. They had some very good fic, including Just Another Day at the Office which was written for me. [livejournal.com profile] skydiver119 did a terrific job. All hail [livejournal.com profile] skydiver119.

Title: Whispers
Fandom: SG1
Characters: Sam Carter
Genre: Gen
Rating: PG
Word Count: 100
Warnings/Spoilers: None
Disclaimer: Fanfic, for fun, not profit.
Notes: It's SG1. It's exactly 100 words. It's a Sam fic. To really understand it, a knowledge of SG1 (specifically A Hundred Days) is helpful. I'm forcing myself to post it because otherwise I'd edit it to death. Of course, that may mean it would eventually become a decent bit of writing... but I hate everything I've written lately, so I think I'll take my chances and post it now.

She dreaded the halls.

Actions froze in mid-movement. Tongues stilled. People stared. Pity pressed against her as she passed – suffocating sympathy tinged with a touch of wariness. And rebuke. Whispers ate at the edges of her consciousness.

"It's been three months."

"She's obsessed."

"Millions to build the particle accelerator."

"She never leaves the base."

"If Kinsey finds out, he'll shut us down."

"I hear she sleeps in his office."

She could live with those whispers. She could ignore them.

"He's probably dead."

She couldn't live with that whisper. She couldn't ignore that one.

Not when it came from her mind.

I signed up to do a Sam Carter fic thinking that the assignment I get will give me the plot, all I have to do is write it. It’d be fun playing in the SG1 universe. However, the assignment really didn’t give me a plot at all. Instead, it listed a couple of requirements that would happily fit any fic I’d write: Team interaction, Sam as scientist and soldier, a little action, a little humor, no ship, no bad endings. There is no plot in that. Now, I have come up with a dozen different ideas, but none have any teeth. When I start writing them, they don’t even give me a scene!

I know what the problem is, too. I just don’t understand Sam. I love the character, mind, but I don’t understand her. To be honest, I have a really hard time understand most female characters on television, which is why I always write the guys.

Without an understanding of the character, I have no story, no flesh to hang on my skeleton of a plot, no reason for the characters to do anything at all. I need a plot to have a story, but I need character motivations to have a plot.

So, in an attempt to figure out how to write this story, I give you Sam Carter as I see her:cut for those not interested in Sam )

I know all these things, but I don’t know why she is all these things. Why did she want to be an astronaut? To explore, to help humanity, to see Earth from orbit? Why does she stay a soldier when she is so obviously perfect for being a scientist? What is her center, what keeps her going, what stopped her from “settling” for Pete? What are her insecurities? What holds her back? More importantly, what drives her?

I know what drives Jack, Daniel and Teal’c. I even know what drives Jonas and Cameron. But what drives Sam? A thirst for knowledge? A drive to succeed? A quest to explore? A promise to someone or herself?

This is the key to writing Sam (or any character) and I’m completely missing it.

I watched SG1 and SGA last night. Loved them both.

I'm so happy that SG1 focused on the "Do they deserve to be gods" and "Is this the type of god you want to worship" with the Ori rather than the whole "You don't need to worship any gods" route that Daniel was spouting earilier in the season. Dispite what a lot of popular culture would have you believe, most people aren't evil at heart and they won't follow evil people if they know they are evil.

SGA was great. Poor, crazy Rodney. Although I found it interesting that Rodney in withdrawl isn't really any more scarastic or mean than he is normally. Heh. The man lacks tact. I usually don't think visually, but when the scene in the icon came up and I thought: I need to icon that.

I've now offically used up more than half of my available icons. *grin* 49 to go.

OK. Off to write.

Rambling. I mean it. Just me babbling on about all the things that won't work in my fic. In which I discuss my plot and try to discover a motivation for my fic )

Please ignore. I'm only posting it because it's part of my ten-step program to getting things done. One more thing to check off my to do list.

He's perpetually perky.

He's obnoxiously optimistic.

He's intentionally oblivious.

And he's subtly sneaky.

Did I mention that he's perky?

How can you not like him?

Perky next to O'Neill is great!

He just bought me SG1 Season 6 off of ebay for cheap(er).

Yay!

Yeah, yeah. I'm still missing Season 5 and I didn't buy Season 7. But Woo! so close to having closure on my obsession.

Besides Season 6 has Abyss. I so totally LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Abyss.

So. Much. Love. For. Abyss.

Oh, yeah.

Life is good.

And my hubby loves me.

Deep Discount DVD must be gearing up for the Christmas season because SG1 Season Four has just arrived

Yee Haw!

Window of Opportunity here I come. Plus many more episodes I haven't seen.

Yay, Me! Yay, Myr! Yay, Wil (although he's only on season one)

However, my bank just so graciously "upgraded" our check cards from Visa to MasterCard. This means I need to go and re-enter the cards in all the places that automatically deduct from our account.

That sucks.

But..... YAY for season four!

I am evil. And I am foisting my evilness off on others.

My husband is watching the first episode of SG1.

Obviously my (and my daughter's) obsessive obsessing over it has rubbed off.

*glee*

Yep. My work is done.

Oh... I also made an icon for a contest in the [livejournal.com profile] sg1_showdown community I belong too. Mind you, I have only seen one ep with Jonas, I just wanted to play around a bit.

Genre: Gen
Rating: PG
Warnings/Spoilers: None
Disclaimer: Fanfic, for fun, not profit.
Notes: In an effort to actually write something, I sat down and wrote myself this little fic. It was one of those "keep writing until it's finished" things. It really has no plot, as it's just a character/introspective piece.

Jack did one last circle of the camp, checking the perimeter one final time. )

ETA:
The whole "write until your done thing" is hard for me and doesn't always produce good writing. This was edited and betaed and made readable by more work than my first sentence implied. Therefor: I need to add thanks to my betas from the Jackfic list over on yahoo: Rodlox and JoleneB, if this fic is any good it is due in no small part to them. Thanks!

And to Amy, too!

Notes: In an effort to actually write something, I decided to take a challenge from a fic list I hang out in. I've never written a drabble (100 words, no more, no less) but I thought I'd give it a shot. The word of the week was "toothache".

It lurked at the back of his mind; gnawing at him. A deep, unending pain, as impossible to ignore as a toothache.

There were times he could almost live with it. Times when other pain pushed it out of his conscious mind. Times when friends, laughter and love eased the emptiness. Times, even, when he could forget for seconds on end, long blessed seconds of forgetfulness and peace.

Then there was today. When the despair pulsed through him, making it hard to think, hard to breathe; hard to live. Pain, guilt, desolation.

Today, oblivion sang to him.

"Happy birthday, Charlie."
