Strange veiwing habits...
Jan. 14th, 2004 11:22 pmI'm watching Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
I can't say that I like the show. I really don't. What I like -- no LOVE -- are the characters.
I don't like how the bad guys get away. Hell, if I want to see bad guys getting away with stuff, I'll read the newspaper. I don't like the whole predictable "Hollywoodness" of the show. Granted it's not as bad as it's older sibling -- the original Law and Order -- but it's close. I stopped watching L&O when I realized that every time there was a religious person on the show, they would end up being the killer. This one just tends to let the bad guys walk a bit more often than I like in fiction. I will watch L&O:SVU, but I still end up disappointed with the ending 4 times out of 10. I'll end up watching it because I really, really like the characters.
I, of course, tired to read the fanfic for it. But since I don't read fic for sex or shipping, I end up not liking any of it. Plus, I realize that what I like about the characters, isn't what most people write about. In other words, my experience with L&O:SVU fanfic is just like my experience with fanfic in almost any other fandom I've been in. Heh. I like my characters noble and strong and honorable and most fanfic writers like them confused and tempted and weak. At least that how I interpret the fic.
Still, I love the characters in the show. I think what I love about them best is that I imagine a whole life for them outside the show. It's all the little bits of information about the rest of their lives that I like. I like the little glimpses of people who manage to be something beyond what we are shown. People who fight every day to stay good and true when the world around them isn't either. I appreciate the struggle, but what I really love is the victory. These character manage to achieve the victory. After the battle, they are still both good and true.
Now, if only the plots were as interesting to me as the characters are.
