I know I don't post that often, outside of reposting tweets. Because of that, I may be something of an unknown to some of the people who occasionally glance at this. There's a lot of reasons I'm quiet on here, and most of the time, I'm happy just lurking. But the lead up and fall out from the US elections has prompted me to share here something that I also put on facebook:

If you can't be friends with someone who would vote for a candidate you don't like, just go ahead and unfriend me now. I have no idea if I actually -- in your opinion -- "voted wrong", but frankly, I don't care. If you can't tolerate a difference of opinion, if you can't handle people who think differently or who act in a way you do not, I don't need to have you cluttering up my friends list. If you are frightened of diversity or unable to hold your own beliefs when faced with opposing views, it's best to leave now. Go live in your homogenous world and I'll live in mine where I expect people tolerate differences of opinions with civility and kindness.

Thank you.

I belong to the landcomm [livejournal.com profile] tvholics and for one of our challenges we were supposed to create a drinking game for any show, past or present. Because Man from U.N.C.L.E. seems to have eaten my brain, I did one for that classic show.

Keep in mind, I love Illya best. If I had more time, I would write more rules... Actually, [livejournal.com profile] finabair, if you are up sometime, we will have a marathon, drink some Rain and write more rules!

Man from U.N.C.L.E. drinking game

  1. Take a drink when Illya answers a question with an enigmatic, philosophical statement. Two the question deals with his personal life.

  2. Take a drink if Illya is wearing black. Two if it’s a turtleneck. Three if he’s also wearing a hat.

  3. Take a drink if Illya gets wet. Two if he gets completely soaked. Three if he’s not near a body of water.

  4. Take a drink if Napoleon hits on the girl. Two if she’s one of the bad guys. Three if she turns him down. Drink the whole bottle if the girl prefers Illya.

  5. Take a drink every time someone uses a secret entrance

  6. Take a drink every time someone says “Open Channel D”. Two if the channel has a different letter.

  7. Take a drink every time Mr. Waverly infers that death is an acceptable risk. Two if he actually forbids one of the boys from going and rescuing the other.

  8. Take a drink anytime Mr. Waverly draws a gun. Two if he shoots it.

  9. Take a drink if THRUSH is behind a plot to destroy U.N.C.L.E. Two if they are out to take over the world.

  10. Take a drink if someone mentions that Illya is Russian. Two if that someone is Napoleon. Three if it’s Illya. Buy a bottle if this happens anytime in season 3.

"It's just a game! Get over it."

That's a statement I've seen a lot on facebook and twitter lately and all directed at the anger and outrage that came from last night's Monday Night Football debacle. The implication is that the people who are posting and ranting are over-reacting (at best) or crazily-obsessed (at worst). The thought behind it being that people shouldn't care about the injustice or the outright errors because it's just a game.

But that's wrong thinking. In fact, I think that's exactly why the anger and outrage is justified -- because it is just a game. It is a game. It has rules and standards and everyone can know what they are. There are people who are set among the players to insure that those rules and standards are followed. That is the whole point of a game.

This isn't life where there are no rules, where the goals are nebulous and no one is watching out to make sure that everything is fair and open. This isn't politics where everyone comes to their own conclusions and there is no right way to think. This is a game.

This is our childhood. This is where we knew right and wrong because it was clearly written in black and white and, by agreeing to play the game, everyone was part of the same controlled, equitable game universe. When the rules of that universe were broken (by accident or design), that could be fixed. There were do-over's and penalties and justice.

In the end -- win or lose -- the players were satisfied because the game was the point. Victory was sweet, defeat was bitter, but everyone won or lost by the same rules. The result was determined by skill or luck according to the rules of the game. It's the point of a game, it's the bond of trust that is the necessary foundation of any game.

Last night that bond was broken. The refs made an obviously wrong call. Given a chance to fix the error, they chose not to. Today the NFL magnified that error by refusing to even acknowledge it. Basically the NFL said "Screw the rules, there is no accountability."

They broke the trust needed to make the game work. The outrage is justified. The next time the players set foot on the field, the next time a fan turns in to watch a game -- there are no rules. It doesn't matter how the players play or what the rules are, it only matters what the refs decide to do. What's the point if there are no rules? What's the point if there is no accountability?

Those rules, that accountability? That's the whole purpose of a game. Those are the things we can control. Those are the things that make it right and fun. Those are the things that are controllable and fixable. It's what distinguishes games from "real life".

Yes, it's just a game. And, damn it, that's the whole point.

Crafty!

Sep. 23rd, 2012 10:48 pm
partly: (That Girl)
I decided to be a bit crafty today, so I decorated my receipts box. It was just a brown box that we toss all our receipts in, but I thought I'd fancy it up a bit. So I took some old comics I had laying around and gussied it up. Nothing fancy, just panels from the comic books and some mod podge. Still, I love how it looks.

Bugs Bunny and Porky Pig!

And just to prove that I'm not entirely insane: the comic book was a very old, extremely used copy. The cover was already gone and the staples edge was worn and torn. I will confess some momentary pangs of guilt in destroying a compete story that could still be read, but since I would never read it again and no one would ever buy it to read it, I got over it.

Mind, I didn't cut up one of the tattered cowboy comics I had. Or any of the Donald Duck ones. I may work up to those.
