First of all GIP. This little picture amuses on many levels -- Myria looked at it and said "Angry, angry little fish". Heh.

For [livejournal.com profile] tvrealm we had to write a rap song for a TV character. I picked Shawn Spencer:

The Spencer Rap
My name is Shawn and I know what you think, I put my hand to my head… No. I don’t need a shrink
I’m a psychic detective, just what’s all the fuss? This here is my partner “Magic Head” Gus.
I solve all the crimes, I astound and bedazzle – I often send Lassie into a frazzle,
Ain’t nothin’ personal, I just need a distraction, to pull the attention away from the action,
I’m sharp and I’m focused, I don’t miss a--

Look, Gus! It’s the frozen yogurt guy! You want to go get two cones? I’d pay but I spent the office petty cash on pretzels last night. Well, Gus, if you don’t want me to spend the petty cash, you shouldn’t hide it under the false bottom on the middle drawer in your desk!
--thing, I can find what's missin' from a shart to a ring,
So bad guys take warning, don’t come to my town, mess with the psych-os and you’re goin’ down!

Made an icon.

[livejournal.com profile] finabair hooked me on Psych and Myr and I have been mainlining the show. I'm one episode away from finishing season 4. Then half of season five and I will be able to watch real-time. YAY. Not that I need another show to watch, but it's such a good show I'll make it fit somehow. Soon I will only have to watch USA network. Well, maybe not for I like some shows on non-cable, but I adore all the USA shows.

The thing I really love about Psych is that the humor is the type of humor I love. It's not belittling, sarcastic or snide, not does it doesn't rely on insulting someone or something to generate the humor. This is a problem that I had with the first seasons of Chuck (as I detailed here). Chuck's humor always bothered me. Psych doesn't do that too me. Granted some of the humor on Psych does come from cliched character behavior, but it's rarely at the expense of the character. Or rather it's never to the detriment of the character. Myr thinks that the show has lost a little something because Shawn isn't as manic in the later seasons as he was in the first. She's not wrong about that, but I like that they are bringing in more dramatic character development. I'm not sure how the current season plays out, but I'm more than willing to keep watching and find out.

I can't explain why I love Lassiter, I just do. People who know me will understand. JennJenn rightly deduced that I would totally love this scene with Lassiter. It was harder than I thought to make it uploadable to LJ, but YAY it's done.

And I totally adore Lassie. This icon makes me happy when I watch it. *happy**happy**happy*

And just because I can, I'm sharing a larger version that I made:

This is totally not the icon I set out to make today. I really need a Sam Winchester icon and I was going to make one. Only I can't find a screencap that I wanted to work from. I'll find one eventually, only I don't think that I should be working from screencaps from this season. It's not that Sam doesn't look good (he does) but the whole "I don't feel anything" is very obvious on his facial expressions - or rather lack of facial expressions. It's a wonderful job of acting by Jared, but not at all good for want I want.

Anyhoo... My hubby showed me some wonderful promo shots from the upcoming Captain America film and this image stuck in my head, so I thought I'd icon it up. It will surprise no one to know that I love Captain America. I'm looking forward to the movie, especially now that I see they are doing the origin story and are using the original design -- at least for the start of the movie.

It took me forever, but I'm happy with the result.

I totally fail at writing Haiku. At least I totally fail at writing Haiku tonight. I've been in a writing slump, which is odd because I've gotten a few warm, fuzzy feedback things lately. Real life is frighteningly real right now, though, so that may be the problem. However, because I can do so, I am going to ignore real life in my LJ. At least for right now.

I was surprised to get a note from GateFic Awards saying that my fic Necessary Sacrifices was nominated for an award. Yay, me. I love that fic. I think its the best fic I've ever written and I'm thrilled that people are still reading it. Especially since it's so damn long. All I'd have to do is make some graphics, throw in a music mix and I could claim a big bang entry. It's a lot to ask people to read a 53k fic.

Myr won't read it because she don't like that I have bad things happen to Jack. Oddly enough, I don't think I was all that mean, but I choose to take her avoidance as a compliment. I'm very happy with some of the POV things I did and I liked some of the little details I put in. I just read it through again and I didn't hate it, so that's a plus.

I want to finish a little White Collar/Burn Notice fic that I started on a lark. Right now I just have Elizabeth Burke meeting up with our favorite burned spy down in Miami. I've fallen in love with the idea and I'm going to try to work through my "I can't write" feelings and see if I can get it done.

And I have to how off my Auggie icon. I love the tattoo. I love the character. And you can never have too many icons of good-looking men. Or at least I can't.

Ok. I finally got my *fail* icon made. Not that today is made of fail, but I love the episode "Trouble with Harry" because poor Face and Murdock are nothing but made of fail in that one. Through no fault of their own, mind.

As with all icons I make, I'm not sure it's any good but I don't know what to do to fix it. I love words on my icons, but words are always a problem.

I made a new icon! Yay, me.

So after trying Graphic Converter on the advice of [livejournal.com profile] finabair, I broke down and downloaded Photoshop Elements on Myr’s computer. Elements wins, hands down. Granted it may be because I’ve been using Photoshop for years and years and know it inside out, whereas I’ve got no clue about Graphic Converter.

But then I really need to have layers and brushes and textures… and I don’t want to have to re-learn everything I know. So I’m going to pony up $80 and get the program. Right now I have a 30-day trial.

Myr’s computer has a much nicer monitor than mine, tho. This icon is a little dark on my machine but it looks terrific on hers. But then, there’s no compensating for monitors.

Anyhow, GIP. And, yes, I am stuck on Supernatural/Dean. Why do you ask?
partly: (Girl)
I tend to like male fictional characters more than the female ones. There’s a lot of reasons for that but mostly its because I like certain character traits and those traits are more often given to male characters. And that's a shame. However, there’s been a rash of posts that talk about the female characters that people love and I thought that I would join in and list women that I adore.

Because I have to editorialize. )

Oh, and GIP.
partly: (Wicked)
Behold my new icon that I love with a mad passionate glee. No small amount of that glee is from the fact that I made it myself (from this image) and it looks all artsy and, yet, still is very me.

I'm actually replacing one of my old icons with this one and so wanted desperately to put the words "Something wicked this way comes" on it, but I couldn't get the words to look decent. Not sure it needs words, mind. I am, however, not a completely visual person and I find words give me comfort -- and the knowledge that my intent with the icon is fully understood.

I find that I don't care with this one, though.

I love my icons. Actually I love the concepts behind all my icons, but I feel the need to go back and tweak some of them now that I have a better grasp of how I can use photoshop and all the nifty things that photoshop can do.

In my ongoing mission to illustrate that I have nothing in common with my flist (nor, perhaps, all of livejournal), I've decided that I'm going to post some links to some of my favorite music. Not withstanding the fact that I'm currently listening to Queensryche, I'm going back to my roots and share music I that will lay odds no one who is reading this has ever heard of: old country music, to be specific. This post talks about about what I like in music, although I'll point out that I listen to almost any type of music provided it has a melody and lyrics I can sing along with (or at least understand).

My first selection is a song that illustrates one of the things I love best about country music -- it doesn't have to make sense. This song came out when I was five, so I will use that as an excuse for my mad love for it.

Burn Notice.

This show owns me. Totally and completely owns me.

I love every single thing about this show. The look. The writing. The style. The characters. The voice-overs. The music. The actors. The cinematography. The acting. Every single thing about this show is good, except that parts that are completely awesome. And it has that magic gestalt that makes it come together in a rare brand of perfect for a television show.

For an indication of exactly how bad I have it for this show: I have a ship. That’s right. Me. The I don’t ship-champion.

Usually, I can take and leave ships… I take them as they are written in the show and I leave them there. If the show gets a ship together, good, if not – or if not forever – I can live with that, too. I may not always see it or I may wish that it ended up differently, but I’ve never been invested in a fictional relationship enough to care outside of the show.

Ah, but Michael and Fiona. Michael and Fiona. Michael and Fiona.

I’ve spent quite a while staring at this post trying to come up with reasons why this ship makes so much sense to me. In the end, it is more than the fact that the writing of the interaction is incredibly real and that the chemistry between the actors is off the charts. Although that helps. No. I like this ship because the characters are equal. They are equally smart and equally strong and they are equally passionate about each other. Don’t get me wrong, they are not the same, they are just equal.

That kind of makes them seem like perfect characters, but they’re not. They are wonderfully flawed and are given perfect, psychologically accurate histories to explain those flaws. While those character flaws cause problems, those same “flaws” are also strengths that allow those characters to save the day. There are no value judgments placed on these “flaws”, either by the characters or the writers. And that’s a trick most shows don’t manage.

What I like best about this relationship, though, is that neither character demands a change in the other. In fact, none of the characters in the show demand change from any other. There’s never that demand (spoken or unspoken) of “if you loved me you would… insert change to be exactly the fantasy I have”. Neither character makes an untenable sacrifice or character change in order to win the approval or love of the other.

And yet, these two characters are better people together than apart. In fact, that’s something I adore about the whole show – the four main characters are better people because of their friendships/relationships with each other. They bring out the best in one another.

And for a ship to work, that’s what's needed: The characters have to bring out the best in each other. When they are around one another the characters have to realize that they need to be better – to be the best them they can possibly be. Not because it's demanded of them, but because they understand that it's what they can be.

This ship does that. The characters challenge each other to be better and provide the strength and support needed to meet that challenge.

I don't ask much from a ship, do I?

ETA: GIP!

It's not exactly what I wanted because I really want a "Tony the Ironsmith" icon and this isn't quite it, but I am working off of limited screencaps (and even more limited icon making skills).

I figure I can always make more or improve the ones I have once I get access to better screencaps.

We rode over in my brother's big van and ate at Victoria's before heading to the concert. As usual the food was great and the atmosphere (where we could sit, eat and talk for the two hours we had to kill before the concert.

It was a wonderful concert and really put me in the Christmas mood. We got back home just after midnight -- which was great driving, really.

This morning was the choir concert at Church. Our choir may be small, but it sounds good. We even got to have candles and do the whole Silent Night thing. FUN! And I didn't have to wait until Christmas Eve.

Then, this afternoon, we had a combined band concert. That means all the band students 6th through 12th grades -- more than 400 students. It was great.

In an effort to fill some of the empty spaces, I made one. I don't do OTP so I didn't want to use a fandom base for this one. I just grabbed a generic pic and think it does a fine job. I may, eventually change the base pic, but the other one that I really like didn't quite work as well. It was perfect as a whole picture, but cutting and fitting into icon size killed it. I watched SG1 and SGA last night. Loved them both.

I'm so happy that SG1 focused on the "Do they deserve to be gods" and "Is this the type of god you want to worship" with the Ori rather than the whole "You don't need to worship any gods" route that Daniel was spouting earilier in the season. Dispite what a lot of popular culture would have you believe, most people aren't evil at heart and they won't follow evil people if they know they are evil.

SGA was great. Poor, crazy Rodney. Although I found it interesting that Rodney in withdrawl isn't really any more scarastic or mean than he is normally. Heh. The man lacks tact. I usually don't think visually, but when the scene in the icon came up and I thought: I need to icon that.
