Busier when I'm not working...
Jun. 19th, 2004 02:22 pmSchool officially ended last Wednesday. And usual when school gets out people ask me: "Well, what are you going to do to fill your time?"
Heh. I have less time in the summer than I do when I'm working.
A quick summary of my life since school quit:
TUESDAY: Last day with kids. Went to Wausau with Wil and Myr to celebrate Myr's graduating to sixth grade and Middle School. Ate hot wings, played the cool little trivia game at the restruant, then headed to Barnes and Noble for my writer's workshop. Dropped Myr off at my folks place at 10is (after writer's group) because she didn't have school Wed and I had a day of work yet.
WEDNESDAY: Last official day at work. Went out to a retirement party with my Mom down in Wausau -- Herford and Hopps steakhouse and brewpub. With desert afterward at the retiree 's home.
THURSDAY: Went into work to clean room (as in wash all the computers and computer tables and swap eight computers out with the faster ones.) Plus work on some tech problems that are plaguing the church staff. I am actually on the books for five hours a week maintenance time that I fulfill with flex hours in the summer. I usually do them all in one day or ten hours in a week so I can skip the next. Still, I end up working more than I'd really like but there's no one else to do the tech work, so... The good part was my mom came in with me and helped with the computers. It is unbelievable how completely flithy the room was. Seriously dirty.
FRIDAY: Cleaned house in the morning and when stopping with my Mom in the afternoon for the "Little to Middle" graduation party that we are throwing for Myr. Finished cleaning house in PM. *blink* I think we did something else, too. Can't think of what, though.
SATURDAY: Went out to my mom's house to make an unexpected batch of Gumbo. We were going to have grilled chicken for the party, but it accidentally got over cooked, so it became Gumbo. Gumbo is delicious but takes a long time to make.
rbonke was in from LostWages and we went to Culver's (the best burger and custard place ever) in the afternoon. Hit the cinema for another viewing of Harry Potter at night.
SUNDAY: Party day. Headed over to my folks to get ready and partied all night. No gifts were expected, instead we had everyone invited (and those four who showed up without being invited) filled out a "Words from the Wise" page that gave Myr some good advice on surviving Middle School. My favorite: Skip Middle School, Go straight to High School.
So, heading onto my first full week of not working --
MONDAY: Myr's first day of College for Kids. She took two classes -- Art Smart and Phun with Photoshop. CFK is held at the UW Extension at Marathon Center, one of the countries best two year academies. Drove down with Wil, since he started at 7 and Myr had to be there at 8. I hung out in the cafeteria until Myr was done at noon, then we got some food had a picnic and hung out at the library until 4 when Wil got out. Biggest problem of the day was that I'm was (and still am) fighting an icky cold and I was absolutely freezing. I was wiped out when I got home and spent the night trying to sleep off a fever.
TUESDAY: My mom decided to come down to Wausau with Myr and me on Tuesday. After we dropped Myr off at the college, we went to Home Depot to trade the storm door she had bought for a right-hinged version of it. Then we searched for some non-yellowing clear coating so she could paint the eagles that her and my dad are making. (For those who care Varathane has a good product we're told). By that time is was back to pick up Myr and then to her house for a quick lunch and then Cinnimon and Maple Syrup rolls that we were making. (Hmmm... I should probably post the recipe to
tastebuds as it is a great recipe and I haven't posted anything to it. Ever, I think.)
WEDNESDAY: Down to Wausau with Wil at 7, found out Myr forgot her art supplies so a quick run home and back between 7 and 8, then a nice relaxing morning drinking coffee and playing games. We had another picnic for lunch, then to the library for the day. We went out to the chinese place to eat supper because I didn't want to have to cook when I got home. Yay, me.
THURSDAY: My mom decided to spend the morning with me in Wausau again. After dropping Myr off we hit a couple of home store places to look for some new, creative storage ideas for me. Menards had some good, fairly inexpensive ideas. It didn't take us long at all to come up with that so we spent the last two and some hours at the little Starbucks playing a game called "Cranium Hoopla". It was great fun. After we picked up Myr, it was back to my mom's for lunch and a look at her external hard drive for her computer that just doesn't want to work. I didn't get it to work, but I did get all the data backed up. Partial yay, I think. Around 2:30 we headed to Pine Crest (the local nursing home) for an ice cream social and polka party with my Grandmother. There were quite a few relatives around, so it went well. Visiting Grandmother is best done in numbers. Got home around five to make supper and clean up.
FRIDAY: Wil had off and we decided that we would spend the day together in Wausau. While Myr was in class we hit the local Starbucks for coffee, then the Best Buy/Barnes and Noble to get him his Father's Day present. After we picked up Myr, it was a picnic in the park and then a movie (mostly because it was to chilly to swim). We went to see Terminal. It was great. Once we got home it was supper and a night of playing Dance Dance Revolution and Prince of Pursia.
Today is much better. Nothing is planned The draw back is I still have a slightly sore throat and Myr has a very sore throat. Minor meds (Advil and Nyquil) seem to be helping, so we will see how it goes.
So goes my life.
Next week is less busy right now. But Myr is going with the folks on Monday and Tuesday, so I will be in at work then (since I didn't go at all this past week). I also want to do some more baking with my mom. I'm not sure when Wil has off, but we want to do some family things together...
Doesn't the saying go "Life is what happens when your making other plans"? Well, I'm making very few plans in order to enjoy the life that falls between them.
