Well, books on CD in this case. We often check some out from the library so that we can listen to them while whe are cleaning, or sewing or traveling.

Because we listen all together the books are always Myr appropriate... which is fine by me. I often think that young adult novels are more interesting than the "adult" kinds.

Friday’s book:

Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick.

This young adult novel is about the friendship between to very different boys -- Maxwell Kane, an giant of a eighth grader who lives with his grandparents because his father is in prison for the murder of his mother, and Kevin Dillon, a 13-year-old genius who was born with a birth defect.

I never had a brain until Freak came along and let me borrow his for a while, and that's the truth, the whole truth. The Unvanquished Truth, is how Freak would say it, and for a long time it was him who did the talking. Except I had a way of saying things with my fists and my feet even before we became Freak the Mighty, slaying dragons and fools and walking high above the world.

It’s short but extremely well written, both humorous and terrifying in parts. It’s a wonderful read about a person trying to overcome both physical disabilities and violent personal history. The difficulty of growing up when you’re afraid of what you will be when you grow up.

Today’s book:

Tangerine

We just started this one, but it’s good so far. Paul and his family has just moved to a new development in Tangerine, Florida where his brother will have a better chance of becoming a big football star. Paul is everything his brother is not and his eyesight is so bad that he could be legally blind.

So far, the feeling I get is that Paul can "see" better than anyone else, especially when he takes his glasses off. It also has a "football" theme running through it, but more of a realistic and somewhat critical view of the importance people put on it.

Well, I’m off to clean and listen to a good book.
