On being a fan
Sep. 27th, 2007 03:36 pmI'm a fan.
I'm a fan of a lot of different things.
I geek-out over shows and movies, I read comic books and have played various role playing games (although never D&D). I own several different CCGs, some only because of the pretty pictures. I can talk to you about the pros and cons of new tech gadgets and own quite a few video games. All in all, I'm rather conversant in all things "geek".
However, I'm also a fan of things that are less "geeky". I like football, love the Packers. I can talk to you about the various pennant races in baseball and would like nothing better for the Cubbies to choke and the Brew-crew win their division (alright, I'll admit that's unlikely to happen, but a girl can dream). Of course, if the Cubs do make it, I’ll root for them to take it all.
I'm a farm girl who grew up and chooses to live in northern Wisconsin. I love the outdoors from farming and gardening to fishing and hunting. I'll talk to you about your crops, which rabbits are best for fast growth and good meat or where you can see the biggest buck or black bear cubs. I can discuss the pros and cons of replanting native plants or rebuilding the wolf population.
I camp in a tent, but prefer not to hike in and only rarely chose the "primitive" campsites. I can ride horse, drive tractor, and can spend an evening doing nothing more than watching the shadows grow across the yard. At the same time, I love to go to the museums in Chicago, riding the el and bumming around looking at the sights. You're just as likely to catch me hanging out at a Renaissance Faire as you would a County Fair.
It's always amazing to me when fans drop into the “us vs. them” mentality. What’s wrong with other people having fun? I don’t understand the appeal of stock car racing, but I know some great stock car fans. You want to talk to me about the last race, that’s fine by me. Nothing is more satisfying to read than a post where someone enthuses about their passions, even if I don’t know who the point leader in the Busch series is.
In this life, I choose to be a fan. It's more fun.
And GIP.
