I thought about that last night and the place we rent has many possible "entrances" (so glad that heat is included with rent). When I let him go I deliberately put him far away from my house. In fact, I released him closer to the neighbor's house than mine.
Mind you, if I find him in my house again, I may just feel slightly less friendly. And since the odds are long that I would be able to tell one bat from another, it may just be some poor hapless look-alike that ends up getting whacked.
