During lunch I dropped over at the TWoP boards and thought I'd entertain/torture myself with the "Big Picture" thread. It usually drives me nuts because I just don't view the world the same way and my obsessive nature demands that I counter those comments. Or at least point out that not everyone shares those opinions. Usually, I end up aggravated.
Today was fun.
The comment is from someone who doesn't like the tone of the show and believes that the show is, basically, propaganda for a rightwing conservative political views (not an unsupportable point, if you come at it with the right mindset). It deals with the rather elaborate and Byzantine plot that has been unraveling.
My problem with the statement? I agree with what he's saying but not with the point he's making. Tricky, that.
So I answered:
Which garnered this response:
Hee.
Much love. That is why I'm on the message boards. I even got a French idiom quoted at me. Now if I only could pronounce it. Well, and was really sure what it means exactly.
Still. Fun.

I assume that the writers had only predefined the general idea of the season and its major shock moments. And since they are focused to surprise their audience, they didn't find a way to lead to them in any feasible way -- or they were not interested. Given this year's success, I can't even say they were wrong to draw such a crude comic. In fact, it's not that stupid: they are close enough to "reality" to strike close to home and get the audience involved emotionally and yet, the story is so absurd that they can deny any political agenda pointing at the real USA.

I think you're right.. Like all good fiction, 24 stays close enough to reality to be understood and interesting, but veers off from it whenever dramatic (or even melodramatic) tension demands.
Which garnered this response:
Partly, that was nicely done: you have managed to agree with me by.. totally reversing my point. Honi soit qui mal y pense. ;). Still, what you say is true, in principle; but as much as I try to imagine it, "like all good fiction" and "24" just don't match this season. I agree with the observation and refuse its association.
