Way back before cable television and satalite dish recievers were common, television stations used to stop broadcasting around midnight. They played the National Anthem and then went to a test screen. It was a sign that we all should be in bed. That television wasn't really worth keeping on 24-hours-a-day.
For a short while when my brother and I were teenagers, one of the local stations started airing "Red Eye Theatre" -- all night movies on Friday night. The song "I can see clearly now" was the theme of the show. There was no one to introduce the movies, just the static picture of a giant red eye-ball and the song.
I don't remember how long the station kept "Red Eye Theatre" on the air or how often we stayed up to watch it, but everytime I hear the song, I think of that time. It was a novel thing, all-night television. But more important than that, it was time well spent with my brother.
I can still remember one of the movies we watched: Where Have All The People Gone. It was good.
I Can See Clearly Now
By: Johnny Nash
I can see clearly now, the rain is gone,
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.
I think I can make it now, the pain is gone
All of the bad feelings have disappeared
Here is the rainbow I’ve been prayin?for
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.
Look all around, there’s nothin?but blue skies
Look straight ahead, nothin?but blue skies
I can see clearly now, the rain is gone,
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.
