It is January, after all...
Jan. 20th, 2004 01:39 pmYAY! We just made it above zero. Hurray! Heat wave, it's 3 degrees out.
It really wasn't supposed to get above zero today at all, and it was -25 when I woke up this morning. I'm greatly amused that there wasn't any urgent, breaking news on any of the major stations about the "arctic chill" no important bulletins on how everything is canceled because of the cold. No great moaning about how hard everything is when it's "THIS COLD".
No. See, we know how to deal with the cold. We all have warm clothes. We all carry jumper cables in the car (OK, we do that in summer, too, but still). We have boots. Snow shovels. We actually put anti-freeze in our cars for its "anti-freezing" properties. We understand that if it's -3 and there's even the littlest bit of snow, traction is something that you only have in the hospital after you've totaled the car. The last time school was closed because of "cold" was about seven years ago and that was only after an entire week of -50 degree temperatures. Plus, I think the school was heading into a three day weekend, anyhow and they wanted to start it a day early. I'm sure the was a snowmobile race or ice fishing tournament going on somewhere...
There are many advantages to living up here in the North Woods. I like to think that the cold drives off (or kills off) all the really stupid people. Well, the stupid and weak ones, at least.
Now, I'll just put on my winter coat, my big, warm boots, my various fur and fur-lined accessories and enjoy the day.
