Ringmaster and friends have the answer

Fancy yourself a "Lord of the Rings' connoisseur? Bet you don't know about Liv Tyler's strangest encounter with a fan, or how Sean Astin views Sam's relationship with Frodo. Below Tyler, Astin, Elijah Wood, Andy Serkis, Dominic Monaghan, Miranda Otto, Brad Dourif and director Peter Jackson answer seven silly questions about the fantasy epic.

Q. In a fight between Gollum and Dobby from "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," who would win?

Wood: "Definitely Gollum, because he's bigger. He is wretched. He is heartless. He'll do anything to win."
Jackson: "I think Gollum would take Dobby out, no problem at all. Dobby would be flat on his back in three seconds. He's not as conflicted as Gollum."
Serkis: "Gollum. From what I've, heard Dobby is the comic' relief. Dobby is 'like Jar Jar Binks - a celebration of technical wizardry rather than a real character."
As much as I agree with them, you notice they completely ignore the fact that Dobby is magical and has magic powers...

Q. What's been your strangest fan encounter with a Tolkeinite?

Monaghan: "I've seen someone dressed up as a half-donkey, half-goose at a convention. I had nightmares about it for a week.
Astin: "I've had loads of women come up to me dressed as either Frodo and Sam. I had someone fly into Washington D.C. from London on 12 hours notice, just to meet me."
Wood: "I haven't really seen that many extravagant fans. Sean has seen a lot; but I don't know where he is hanging out."
Tyler: "(Director) Kevin Smith is so obsessed with me speaking Elvish that, on the set of 'Jersey Girl,' he would ask me to do it every day. He would get bright red and weak in the knees, and he'd make me say my lines."
I wonder if Sean does get more weirdos or if Elijah just doesn't acknowledge them as weird?

Q. Are Sam and Frodo gay?

Astin: "No. Tolkien based their relationship on the one between attendants and British officers during World War I. Those enlisted folk were characterized by their unusual devotion. I would say that Frodo and Sam's relationship is an incredibly powerful love bond between two males that does not include eroticism. To me, it's an asexual love. It's about survival and fraternity."
Wood: "Sam and Frodo are two people who care about each other and rely on each other in a way that you don't really see anymore. There is certainly nothing wrong with Frodo and Sam being homosexuals, but I don't think that they are. It is interesting, certainly, for people to talk about that and draw those comparisons, but it isn't actually how we saw it. It's certainly not how Sean and I played the roles.
I'm so glad they said this because this is how I've always seen the relationship. Not that this will stop all the fanfic slashers from insisting that it is the way they played it or the wacko real-person-slash people from writing about how its obvious that all the actors are involved in gay relationships...

Q. Did you get to keep anything of your costumes from the movies?

Tyler: "I wanted to keep my Elvish ears, but they're gelatin, so they melt. You can only wear them once and then they kind of disintegrate."
Wood: "I have THE ring. I keep it in my office. It is just a plain gold ring. That's the irony of that damn thing, it is so simple yet so powerful."

Q. What do you think of your action figure?

Dourif: "This is my first movie with toys. I've been nominated for an Oscar and won awards but never have I been as excited as when I first saw my action figure. But then I noticed that it had eyebrows. I went through hell shaving my eyebrows, and they give my action figure eyebrows. I couldn't believe it."
Otto: "It's my face but Barbie's body."
Tyler: "Forget about the action figure. What I find really exciting is that there's an Arwen costume for Halloween. I sent my assistant out to find one but she came up empty-handed. I was really bummed. I wanted to be Arwen for Halloween."
You know, there are just too many ways the statement "Do you play with your own action figure" can be interpreted for it ever to sound innocent.

Q. Tell us something about "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy that no one else knows?

Serkis: "I based Gollum on my cat. He had a hairball and started to cough and convulse. The character's voice came from that moment."
Tyler: "Arwen actually never kissed Aragorn. I never touched Viggo's lips because his beard was so coarse and straight. Viggo has all of that manly Strider stubble, so I couldn't really get a kiss in there."
Wood: "The next movie might be longer than three hours."
The movie doesn't have to be longer than three hours because I know the "Special Edition DVD will be.

Q. Speaking of the next movie, what happens in "The Return of the King"?
Jackson: "The final film is triumphant. It has this wonderful bittersweet sadness. It's Biblical. It's much bigger than the second film but incredibly intimate. I've watched it several times, and it made me cry. The story of Frodo and Sam, in particular, becomes one of pure courage and love. I don't want to talk about what happens in the end, but it is incredibly sad."
*Whimper*

The Cosmo (local theatre) is having a midnight showing. I've got tickets. I still have to work the next day, but I'm sure I'll have more than enough energy to survive.

Uh...there's more of them than there should be. It's solid italics from "Are Frodo and Sam gay?" on down.

Y'know. Shave 'em a bit. More discreet that way.

Ah... not on my computers they aren't.

Not on the Mac in either Netscape or Explorer... or on my PC at work...

Are you sure you don't have italics on the brain?

I did, however, go back and check my coding because you usually just don't see things (at least not in my LJ).

I did notice that I had a space between the i and the > in the coding, perhaps it was that that was messing you up. It didn't bother my computers, but perhaps those less adaptable type computers (and people) couldn't handle it.

You/Shaggy gonna be around tonight, 8ish? Gwai's getting tired of the tunnels I've been keeping him in for a good month, now.
