Today is:
National Cream-filled Donut Day
National Pet Memorial Day
The Walton's Birthday 1972
National Anthem Day
Cream filled donuts are good. And I do understand the appeal of places like Krispy Kreme -- after all nothing is as good as fresh donuts. Even average donuts served fresh are great. But my favorite donut are what we call "Sawdust rolls" they are a type of large cinnamon roll/donut that has a thin coating of frosting and is then sprinkled with crushed peanuts or bread crumbs. Yum. It's really good if you put a slice of garlic bologna on it. Add a cup os coffee and you have the breakfast of champions.
Heh.
Actually, it's really the mid-morning snack of cold, hungry hunters. Nothing tastes as good as hot, strong coffee when you've been standing still for four hours in below zero weather. Of course, it was our mid-morning snack when we were out logging. In below freezing weather. You had to haul the logs out of the forest when the ground was frozen, after all. And really, it's a lot more comfortable to log when it's cold than when it's hot.
Pet Memorial Day. I went through a lot of pets when I was a kid. Dogs, cats, fish. There were also the rabbits, cows, pigs, etc. But they weren't really pets because they were more than likely going to end up as dinner. Never make pets out of things you plan to eat. It's a good rule. I had a dog named Flash -- a basset/beagle hound mix that I loved dearly. He was, however, just a hound. A wonderful, terrific, absolutely adorable hound, but a hound none-the-less. Which means that he loved hunting above all and would forever follow anyone who would feed him. Still, he was a great dog. He was a gentleman. He would walk away from you if you would light up a cigarette. He wouldn't lick your face if you had been drinking. He would do anything for food, but if he wasn't hungry... well, let's just say he liked his rest. I miss him.
