Actual political rant inside: inspired by truly annoying ads on TV, insane and arrogant claims by the candidates and their supporters, and my own depressive mood.
In an election year, if it freezes Halloween night in Eagle River and three different people see strange purple lights in the sky above Hayward, the incumbent always loses the election...
and
If, on Jan. 20 the year before the election, it it warmer than 23 degrees in Ponataski, the challenger always wins the election...
So, with these two variables set and assured, there will be no reason to hold an election next Tuesday. Feel free to stay home and enjoy the pointless exercise of democracy, for the results have already been assured.
And...
We always root for the Packers. ALWAYS.
Remember: 9 out of 10 statistics are pointless, and the other 2 are wrong.
And yes I am so glad that the election will be over on Tuesday. I only wish I had the faith to believe that on Tuesday night we would have an elected president rather than a whole set of attorneys and a whole segment of the population set to yell: "The only way we could have lost is if the other side cheated!"
I get the feeling that I'm living in a country full of school children all set to pout and hold their breath because they didn't get their way.
I can see it now: The losing side plugging their collective ears and shouting "We don't care what the vote is we won! We won! and the winning side all signing "Sha-na-na-na Goodbye" and doing the whole "Loser!" thing.
Truly I tell you, I am so glad I live in the middle of nowhere.
I believe:
1. There is a difference between coincidental statistics and cause and effect.
2. It is possible for my candidate to lose without having the other side cheat.
3. No matter how strongly I feel, it doesn't make me right.
4. Even if I arrogantly believe that my beliefs are the only right, just and sane beliefs, no one else has to agree with me.
5. If others don't agree with me, I do not have the right to pout and insist that they did it only because they are too stupid to know better.
6. The world (or even the USA) will not end if my candidate isn't elected.

Date: 2004-11-01 09:17 am (UTC)From:And the media. Does the media count as part of the ones pulling the strings? Never have I been so disappointed in the media. OK. That's not true. I have been this disappointed in the media before, just not so constantly disappointed.
I'm so glad that I can at least go to the Internet and find the direct text of any one speech that the media is mangling. That way, I don't have to rely on someone else's interpretation of what was said.
*deep breath*
I will be calm or I, too, will vote for Kermit the Frog. Or Santa. Santa is high on my list of good people to vote for.

7. It's possible to disagree with folks about politics (and religion, and other stuff) and still respect both them AND their (well-considered) views...even if those disagreements are vehement.

One more day. I pray it'll be OVER then rather than the circus I'm suspecting we'll have--and that the presence of Way Too Many Lawyers indicates will probably be the case.

Thanks again about Thor.
