We go to Convergence every year. Have gone since it started. It's a big fan run con. Much bigger than this backwoods girl otherwise attends -- well, GenCon, aside.
It also has great panels, a party-city atmosphere, and terrific programing layout that makes it easy to know what you want to go to and gives you time to make it from one thing to another (and even allows you to hit the bathroom or get a snack). You can easily avoid the parts of the con that you don't care for and still find enough activities to make it worth the price of admission -- which is only $40 if you get in before May 15. (And was only $25 for us, since we pre-reg at the con the year before). Most important to me, since I want to keep my eleven-year-old daughter involved in fandom, it has a family friendly atmosphere that provides activities for kids and makes an effort to keep the more "adult" activities for adults only.
The con tries to provide something for everyone with several different programming 'tracks': 'Art & Comics', 'Science and Technology', 'Movies', 'Television', 'Literature', 'Sci Fi Hotdish', 'Gaming' and 'Youth'. I find most of the panels to be fun and engaging, even if does tend to be somewhat Minneapolis and city-centric. By that I mean it assumes that unless you live a small area with millions of people you must be complete backwoods redneck -- a problem I run into with a lot of big city scifi fans.
Anyhow, I was checking it out today and noticed who the guests were. They are very comic and writer friendly this year -- YAY!
* Len Wein - Writer for comics and animation, creator of Swamp Thing, Nightcrawler & Wolverine
* Dr. Jim Kakalios - U of M physics professor, author of an upcoming book on the science of superheroes
* Mercedes Lackey - Author of many popular novels, including the Valdemar and Bardic Voices series and folk music lyricist
* Larry Dixon - Co-author of Mage Wars and Dariens Tale series, author of Other Side of Good News and fantasy artist
* Marv Wolfman - Writer for comics and animation, creator of Blade, Bullseye & The New Teen Titans

It's going to be a trick for us to get there this year as it is. We're planning a car trip out to Oregon in June and we will have to make sure we're back by the first of July. Very scary, actually.
BTW, have you gotten *any* of the email responses I've sent you? I'm beginning to think that yahoo hates me...
