Such glee.

In my story I'm writing (BreckenHaven) I have my main character talk to himself when he's stressed. Not that unusual.

However, when I have him do it, I have him refer to himself by name. For example, my main character, Bishop, is lost and being chased in a strange woods:

The darkness rustled around him in the breeze and he hunched back, closer to the tree, imagining monsters lurked out there, somewhere. "You're losing it, Bish, you know that." He spoke aloud, taking small comfort in the sound of his voice.

Now in the writer's group that I belong to, the one gal absolutely hates that I do that. She insists that no one refers to themselves by name even if they would be nuts enough to talk out loud to themselves. Now, I restrained myself from pointing out that I do, because, you know, I'm sure she thinks I'm weird enough as it is.

But I've noticed that in SG1 and 24, both main characters do refer to themselves like that when they are talking.

So, I'm not crazy.

Unless, of course, using fictional characters to justify possibly insane behavior is crazy.

....

Yeah. Let's not go there.

FWIW, I do it all the time. Then again, dunno how much it's worth if you're trying to support a contention that you're not crazy...

Seriously, tho, I think this person just has a weird personal bugaboo. Lots of people do this in fiction, and presumably it's because lots of writers, or people writers know, do it IRL.

um... I don't do it *often*, but I do it too....

Meh. It's a character trait. SHe might have a valid argument if you had ALL of your characters doing that.

Just smile sweetly and if she continues to harp on it, tell her if it's good enough for Shakespeare, it's good enough for you. {Caesar: Caesar shall forth: the things that threaten'd me
Ne'er look'd but on my back; when they shall see
The face of Caesar, they are vanished.)

RAY!

How are you?

You know, what's really sad is when I do talk to myself, I do so by my last name... well, actually, my maiden name.

That would really freak her out. *grin*
