I know I wasn't going to use the icon... but I needed another 24 one and this will do until I get one I like better.
I've been thinking about the plot turn at the end of the last episode when the new mystery bad guys showed up, killed Marianne and took Curtis. What follows is just speculation; I have no spoilers here, just guesses based on what I'd like to see.
What if the guys who showed up at the office aren't directly involved, but are more like "Damage Control" for the McLennen-Forster, the defense contractor who created the override device? After all, the override device was stolen at seven in the morning and the corporation that made it -- a big defense corporation that, I'm sure, has huge stock concerns -- knows all about it.
What if these guys aren't interested in the terrorist plot at all? What if they just want to cover their corporation's connection to the device? I mean, once it gets out that they built the device that allowed this and that it was used in a terrorist attack, I'm sure the stock will plummet. Huge cash losses here.
Powell (the guy killed at the helicopter) and Marianne both worked (in some capacity) for M-F. They sold the information and know-how about the override device to the terrorists. Powell even showed up at the compound to make sure that the override was working before he took off with all his cash.
Now, at seven in the morning when the override device was stolen, M-F would have started to do an internal investigation. It realizes the implications of the theft, figures out that Powell and Marianne are involved. Now we have to assume here the M-F's goal is not to stop what's going on, but to keep knowledge of how it's being done from the public. That covers the whole 'evil-corporate' angle.
Marianne went to the CTU to keep up on how much CTU knows and to be able to run damage control at that end. If Marianne had enough clearance to work for M-F, it would give some credence to her having the clearance to work at CTU. M-F rigged the bomb at CTU to kill Mariane so she couldn't tell anyone of their involvement. Same reason they killed Powell at the chopper.
To me, it appeared that Marianne knew the people who showed up with guns and she immediately tried to tell them that she hadn't accessed any information. These Corporate Thugs were there to stop her from giving CTU any information. They would have also been able to clear the building of innocent bystander, because they own the building. They want to question Curtis (poor Curtis) in order to find out how much the CTU knows and suspects.
This would mean that M-F in not directly in control or cahoots with the terrorists, but is instead, running a totally separate operation that will run counter to CTU. Possibly even against CTU. But not directly for the terrorists. They just are solely focused on damage control right now, and if that means stopping the CTU from discovering evidence that can implicate them, they will get rid of it.
I have a hard time believing corporate interests behind the entire plot because I don't see how any profit or benefit would come from melting down 104 plants. It would not only ruin the US but it would have global implications as well. I just don't see any corporation thinking that's a good idea. On the other hand, after it got going, I could see them just doing damage control, even if it means hindering the CTU investigation. This, of course, would be done by a few people in the know. Always best to have a person as a villain.
I think it would be an interesting twist if M-F would have some big time investors who actually have morals and would be outraged that such a thing could be happening. Hey, it could happen.
With this there would be a whole second front going, where Jack and company would have to fight through the corporate blockade in order to get enough info to fully stop the terrorist plot. Perhaps even with corporate thug going after Jack and other CTU agents openly in order to keep the corporations involvement from getting out.
Of course, there could also be more than just the "meltdown" plot going on. I'm going with the thought that there were a whole lot of pictures in the "Basement of Terror" and that some of them will point to new problems that the CTU will have to deal with.
Now, if I only could put this much thought into my writing, life would be better.
