I am taking time and listing all of the responsibilities that I have acquired over the seven years of working here. In all the years I've worked here and despite all the techie stuff I do the only job description I have ever had is as a "teacher". Now as any teacher will tell you, that job description is a little vague, but it doesn't include any of the computer and network admin stuff I have been doing.
I'm doing this partly in an effort to build a decent resume, partly as self-preservation to prove that I do do a lot around here and partly as a point to the powers that be that they will need someone to look after these things when I'm gone.
I have just moved on to my third page in the list.
A lot of that is do to the fact that my usual answer to anyone who asks me to do anything remotely tech related is "Of course. When do you need it?" Because I love techie stuff and I love challenging desktop publishing stuff and I love to write. I've got teachers who can't change the ink on their printers and teachers who won't do a simple restart on the computer because "They don't know anything about computers". They will also let these problems set for weeks without venturing to try the fix I give them because they just have too much else to do. Even the ones who are computer literate tend not to want to take the time to learn the programs necessary to produce good looking desktop publishing documents.
Now don't get me wrong. All that may irritate me occasionally, but I also understand that teachers are extremely busy and that they don't have time (nor the inclination) to learn (or remember) the stuff that they will only use once in a blue moon. I'm also perfectly happy to do that sort of thing for them as long as they are patient and considerate -- which they usually are.
It's just that seven years of "Sure, I'll do it" there's a lot of stuff that I'm doing.
One of the heartening aspects of all of this is that there are several people here that are aware that the next person may not have the ability or the inclination to do what I do. Heh. It's kind of interesting to have other people more concerned about my not coming back than I am.
And you know the most interesting thing about the list? The job of "Provide any posters, flyer, banners or other desktop publishing documents as needed/requested" only takes up one line, but covers a lot of different tasks.
Heh. Kind of fun, really.
