I don't answer troll-like posts. I don't.

*sob*

But this person was an idiot. To make matters worse, I had agreed with something that he/she had posted earlier. So, I suppose that I needed to point out that, once this person delved into "loony world" I no long agreed with him/her.

The post (in response to someone decrying a preceived lack of support for civil rights over on the 24 TWOP board):

Thankfully, it's been my experience in life that such people get their worlds rocked, if you just wait long enough.

It's the same thing as the anti-abortion fanatic suddenly faced with a knocked-up teenage daughter, or a homophobe suddenly finding out his best friend is gay. Or the moralist suddenly seeing his phone sex victim come forward.

Someday, the law-and-order types will find themselves facing a loved one in trouble. It'll be pretty amusing to see how fast they get liberal.

The number of things wrong with that argument made my brain hurt and forced this response:

But isn't that akin to saying "Someday, the liberal types will find themselves facing a loved one murdered/raped/assaulted by some guy out on a technicality. It'll be pretty amusing to see how fast they get law-and-order."

Both statements assume that a person's political and philosophical beliefs are based solely on "what's best for me right now". Not to mention they both assume that those who hold the opposing view are really a bunch low-watt light bulbs that will only be brought to their senses by something horrible happening to the ones they love.

Not the best basis for any discussion at all, really.

I was good. I didn't troll. I was polite. I called him/her an idiot and lumped him/her in with all those complete wackos on the other side without actually saying so.

Still. What an idiot. Hell of a way to carve out the high ground, isn't it? By wishing bad things on those who disagree with you?

Hee. I've been laying low on the TWOP boards. I like the "Big Picture" thread best when discussions actually take place rather then when people are preaching.

I notice that, here at the end of the season, everyone seems to feel that they need to convert everyone to their point of view before the show ends and some poor heathen is left out there, thinking their own (wrong) thoughts.

Still I can handle the Big Picture thread much better than I can the "Bitter" and "Non-Bitter" threads.
