I honestly don't recall whether I went trick-or-treating when I was 12. Now this is gonna bug me all night. ;-)
I think collecting for UNICEF is a neat idea, but not mandatory. I used to LOVE going caroling and collecting for [insert charity name here] as we went along, but never collected for any charity while trick-or-treating.
I think by the time I was 12 they may have been starting to do trick-or-treating in the daylight, which kinda defeats most of the proper atmosphere, IMO, so I may not have.
Then again, I probably did. I do have a brother 5 years younger who needed to be brought around. At some point, tho, I switched to dressing up to hand out candy at MY house. I did that until I was in an apartment where somehow nobody comes trick or treating. I have a photo of me in my Jenna costume with my brother dressed as a ghost (wearing my old bedspread, in fact, pinned together...the fringe really made a statement, y'know?) handing out candy one year, so that was in college years. I loved trick-or-treating, even though I could take or leave the candy (it often lasted me 'til very near Easter.)
Even if she "should" collect for charity probably, I'd leave it up to her without guilting her if she chooses otherwise. People become jaded with celebrations and traditions so early in life, if she's still pumped to trick or treat, I'd say rock on.
