partly: (Pretty Please)
This is a rather long thought that I wrote and posted as a reply to something [livejournal.com profile] allisnow wrote.

I thought I'd post it here, because it's one of the little "writing things" that bothers me. Just ask my hubby who had to sit through my long, verbal thought process that finally brought me to this conclusion.

So, for those of you who haven't see the show, in the last episode of BSG they did this cute little trick of propelling the show a year forward in time by saying "One year later". That's it. One year later, and this is how it all is now. I spent a half-hour car trip with my husband tying to explain how I thought the time-jump could be a "cheat" – not that is was, mind, just that it could be.

In my opinion, BSG spends focus on characters before anything else. They take an episode and focus on the development of a character, sometimes I feel, to the detriment of everything else in the show. Still, it does an amazing job and is always worth watching.

So, suddenly skipping a year in the life of characters that I find intriguing and complex and then telling me "Hey look, this is how they all are now, without showing the me the process of how they got there" is, IMO, a cop out. There are so many things I like to see, so many questions I'd like answers to. If Starbuck's been married a year, did she kick her drinking problem? How as she settled down to a non-war dominated life? Who does the dishes, her or the hubby? And Roslin. She's happy teaching school, huh? Why? Where's her civic outrage that Gauis is running New Caprica like his own fiefdom – especially since she knows he's in with the cylons at some level? I could go on, but I'm sure you understand what I'm saying.

I don't mind where they ended up. In fact, I love where they ended up. I just wanted to see them get there. After pointing out that a year of "getting settled" could be boring, Wil – brilliant husband that his is -- asked me a really good question: Would I have been happy if they would have ended with landing on New Caprica and then spend an episode or four setting up everything to this point. Yes, I said, that's exactly what I want.

And then it hit me: That's probably what they are going to do. BSG loves doing flashback episodes. They can easily intersperse all of the "how they got here" bits in between the stories of the first couple of episodes. They may even do a complete hour long "here's what happened" show, kinda like Lost did when they wanted to tell us what happened to the tail section people.

At least, that's what I'm hoping. Because I don't want to have to figure out all these stories by myself.
