My folks are traveling out west and my mom said to me that she no longer feels bad about how dry it is back here at home because out west everything is on fire. Drought is a quiet, slow killer and there's no huddling victims for the press to use to put a face on (or get ratings off of) this natural disaster.
My mom's right, we're doing pretty good. Right now we have a thunderstorm moving through. It may just save the farmers around here. Hard to say, though, because the rain is so spotty. With the drought emergency the governor called, though, the farmer's at least have more options for irrigating and claiming insurance.
Looking ahead for the forecast, the weatherman had this to say:
If you remember back to Friday of last week, I mentioned the depressing extended outlook. It looked liked persistent hot and dry weather developing for the last couple days of July and the first week of August. Things have changed a little for the better. It still looks like a fairly dry weather pattern, but not as hot as it once looked. Instead of 10 straight days of 95 degrees and no rain. It looks like a couple hot days followed by 6 or 7 moderately warm days in the 80s. The rain chances still look slim. Last week I said the extended outlook was "super" bad. I'll have to change that a little. With the potential for some rain this week, and again on Sunday, and the slightly cooler extended outlook, I'll upgrade it too "really" bad. We are moving up in the world. Maybe by tomorrow, the extended outlook will be just plain "bad".
Right now "bad" sounds really, really good.
