partly: (Save Me)
Catching up. Believe it or not.

Friday, April 6th was:
Drowsy Driver Awareness Day
I think that this is a bit of a misnomer. After all, being drowsy almost insures that the driver won’t be aware. I think it should be “Drowsy Drivers Stay off the Road Day”. That would be better, don’t you think?

Tartan Day
A day that honors the Scottish and all they have contributed to the US. They have a whole Tartan Week in New York that ends in a parade on the 13th. Do you think curling is featured? Nope. But there are a lot of “pipe bands” listed as well as a link to How to wear a kilt.

Teflon Day
Why does Teflon need a day? I think it’s just free advertising, really.

World Marbles Day
Cancelled. Because from the looks of it, most of the world has lost its marbles.

National Walk to Work Day
Which, since my new job is only two blocks away, is something I plan on doing every day.

Saturday, April 7th was:
National Birding Day
I don’t bird. Unless you count stepping outside and watching the eagles fly over. And the crows and junkos and woodpeckers eat in the front yard. Plus the Robin looks to be wanting to build its nest on our light again. I think that’s pretty good for not birding.

National Love Our Children Day
As opposed to every other day that’s Hate Our Children Day. Gads. Go ahead. Dare to love your children everyday.

No Housework Day
In my current state of health, this is becoming no housework week. *hack* *hack* *Cough*

Sunday, April 8th was:
Trading Cards are for Grown-ups Day
Of course they are. Who else could afford them?

All is Ours Day
Bwaaaahhh-Hah Hah Hah...*cough* *hack* *gag*. Evil laughter will follow, but remember, all is mine, ah, ours!

Draw a Picture of a Bird Day
The robin was sitting on the shed today. Its been too cold for him lately, so he fluffs himself up to twice his normal size and hangs about hoping for some food. I should bring some from my mom’s house because, despite his size (or maybe because of it), he seems sickly. Yesterday he was in the yard tossing dried leaves in the air where the wind would whip them in circles before dropping them. You could see his individual feathers when the wind gusted. All he would have had to do was open his wings to fly away.

Today, April 9th is:
Jenkins Ear Day
This commemorates (I believe) the War of Jenkin’s Ear. I quote from InfoPlease: Jenkins's Ear, War of, 1739–41, struggle between England and Spain. It grew out of the commercial rivalry of the two powers and led to involvement in the larger War of the Austrian Succession. The incident that gave the name to the war occurred in 1731 when, according to Robert Jenkins, master of the ship Rebecca, he had his ear cut off by Spanish coast guards. English smuggling and resentment at exclusion from the Spanish colonial trade caused the war, but Jenkins's story in the House of Commons (1738), reinforced by the showing of his carefully preserved ear, had a tremendous propaganda effect and forced the reluctant Sir Robert Walpole to declare war. The hostilities with Spain up to 1741 were marked only by the naval engagements of Admiral Edward Vernon in the West Indies. Which really just proves that the world is much the same that’s its always been.

National Cherish An Antique Day
The only antiques I cherish, I cherish not because they’re antiques, but because they belonged to people I loved.

Dyngus Day always the Monday after Easter
This is a festival where people pour water on one another. As in buckets of water, from tall balconies. Or buckets of water on sleeping people. I Kid you not. It seems it was first the boys throwing the water on the sleeping girls. Yeah. It sounded that way to me, too. The polish can be weird. I’m so glad this never made the Easter tradition around here. However, it’s a big thing in Buffalo.

Name Yourself Day
