Fanfic is the using of other people's characters without permission in stories of your own. Most people put disclaimers on the top that say that's what they are doing.

Some of these disclaimers are very, very amusing. Type that I get the biggest laugh out of go something like this:

I don't own the characters of *insert name of show*. They're owned by *insert creators/owners*. However, all other characters are mine, so please don't use them without my permission.

Yeah. Because it would be just so wrong for someone to take something I created and use it. Fanfic about something I write is just wrong.

Sometimes fans baffle me.

I had an argument about that with a girl that made icons and demanded fealty to her name in the posting of her materials. I tried to explain what a copyrighted photo was, you know, like every picture she was stealing in order to make her icons; but she just couldn't fathom the idea.

It only matters when it's THEIR stuff. I've had people get upset when someone uses the *idea* that was in their icon. As if you can own an idea. It's bizarre.

Considering I'm basing what happened to the A-Team off of Blackbird in my crossover fic, do I pay your royalties now or later? *grin*

If only I could have worked in a certain man in a black sportscar into the fic....
