Tonight my Mom and I were chatting about politics and the world and the topic of Cuba came up. I know that there is a lot of talk about how Castro's resignation is the opportunity for Cuba and what a change this will make and how this is a "world changing event".

Maybe. But I just can't work up a great deal of emotion about it.

Quite honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Fidel is dead and has been for a while.

The man hasn't been seen in public since his "state-secret illness" in 2006. He doesn't give a public address or even a voice recording of his resignation. Nope, it's just a article in the paper. Nothing weird about that, I'm sure.

It doesn't really matter, one way or the other. His brother has been running the Cuban government for the past year and a half and there hasn't been any major changes. I don't see any major changes in the near future if only because his resignation letter made it clear that he would be staying on the sidelines, keeping up with policies of the government and society (because you know, Cuba has prospered so during the past 50 years, it would be a shame for that to change). Even if Fidel is out of the picture, there can always be a letter or two, a "policy statement" from Fidel that will keep Cuba on the straight and narrow.

Call me a cynic but I just don't see a major change coming from the government that Castro himself set up.

I don't either, but I suppose it's possible. This reminds me of weekend at Bernies. I think they're just propping his dead body up in a chair.

Probably just as many laughs as Weekend at Bernies, too!

(I come by way of Amy)

Actually, I see a lot of logic in your theory... I'm one of those who mentioned it as "world changing" mostly because he was the Big Bad for so long that even a staged resignation and retirement to the Village has me doing the Keanu Reeves "whoooah". The Scientologists did it with L. Ron Hubbard, as have others...

You're welcome here anytime! (In all honesty, I often read through your journal via Amy and Jennie, I just never have anything enlightening to add *grin*)

It may be world changing, it could be. It all depends on how much the replacements are ideologues and how much they really want to make the country better rather than just prove that their ideology is right.

Actually, there's a great opportunity for the new government to make it's changes, really. They can do something, then in a week or two "Fidel" can issue a statement that endorses or tweaks it and *presto* they have a viable change!

With luck, we'll look back and say it was "world changing". *grin*
