partly: (Wolvie)
Wolverine is still my favorite superhero. Yes, Batman rocks. But let's face it, it's really only in the Dark Knight movies that he comes close to matching Wolverine. I never found the comic series interesting enough to hold my interest.

I knew I would love Wolverine in the movie, but I didn't expect to find Sabertooth sympathetic. I also have to admit that they did a great job with Gambit. Remy has always been in constant danger of devolving into nothing more than a fangirl's ultimate fantasy, but they made him full of Gambit goodness while still making him likable.

More than that, there were some actual surprises in the movie. Some of which I cyphered out and some of which I never saw coming. The biggest surprise -- and most satisfying -- was the fact that they managed to fit this movie into the same universe of the other X-Men movies. No small feat considering how often comic books themselves have to to retcon their histories so that they can mess with the characters.

In my mind Wolvie is all about choice and free will. If the choices are easy and life is fair and you choose to do the right they, well, that's nice. But if the choices are hard and life is unfair and every fiber in your being is telling you to do the wrong thing, and you still choose to do the right thing... well that's when a choice really matters.

To me, that's what Wolverine is. He's all about the ease of doing the wrong thing and the sacrifice of doing the right thing and doing the right thing anyway.

Comic book philosophy -- anti-elitism at it's best.
