Made an icon.

[livejournal.com profile] finabair hooked me on Psych and Myr and I have been mainlining the show. I'm one episode away from finishing season 4. Then half of season five and I will be able to watch real-time. YAY. Not that I need another show to watch, but it's such a good show I'll make it fit somehow. Soon I will only have to watch USA network. Well, maybe not for I like some shows on non-cable, but I adore all the USA shows.

The thing I really love about Psych is that the humor is the type of humor I love. It's not belittling, sarcastic or snide, not does it doesn't rely on insulting someone or something to generate the humor. This is a problem that I had with the first seasons of Chuck (as I detailed here). Chuck's humor always bothered me. Psych doesn't do that too me. Granted some of the humor on Psych does come from cliched character behavior, but it's rarely at the expense of the character. Or rather it's never to the detriment of the character. Myr thinks that the show has lost a little something because Shawn isn't as manic in the later seasons as he was in the first. She's not wrong about that, but I like that they are bringing in more dramatic character development. I'm not sure how the current season plays out, but I'm more than willing to keep watching and find out.

I can't explain why I love Lassiter, I just do. People who know me will understand. JennJenn rightly deduced that I would totally love this scene with Lassiter. It was harder than I thought to make it uploadable to LJ, but YAY it's done.

And I totally adore Lassie. This icon makes me happy when I watch it. *happy**happy**happy*

And just because I can, I'm sharing a larger version that I made:

On the surface you would think that Chuck would be the perfect show for me to love. It's got spies and humor and action and talented, good-looking actors. All of my friends are madly in love with the show and it's the perfect opportunity to sit around and glee about a show everyone is on the same page with.

Yet, I just can't share the love. Parts of Chuck, I adore. Heck, entire episodes can be made of win. But there is always something that keeps me from really loving the show. Quite honestly, I don't think that I'd watch it at all except my daughter loves it and I watch it with her.

The worst part was I could never put my finger on what really bugged me about the show. The best I could come up with was that the "Buy More bits" really bothered me. And that wasn't that much of a shock, either. As much as I love humor in my shows, I'm not particularly fond of "comedy" and the Buy More portions lean strongly toward the "sit-com" feel that I don't always appreciate -- especially when it deals with the more crass/stupid humor like they do.

But it was more than that, too. Because while I'm not fond of such humor, I can usually get over it and focus on the awesome parts of the show. With Chuck, I couldn't do that. Then after watching a recent episode (the one that aired on 2/1 – the most recent ep is sitting on the DVR waiting for Myr to want to watch it), I suddenly understood exactly what bothered me.

And this time it really is all about the girls )

I’m not looking to convert people to my point of view on this. I just had to write this out because I haven’t been able to articulate what it was about the show that kept it off my “Squee-worthy” list. I do enjoy watching Chuck and there is so much about the show that I adore. The problem is, I just can't watch the show without being constantly aware of how much parts of it piss me off. And while my (over)reaction may be irrational, my issues with it are valid. YMMV, of course.

With my very busy life, I occasionally fall behind on my television watching. Chuck seems to be the show that ends up collecting on my DVR. Which means right now I have four episodes of Chuck to watch. YAY.

I really like how Chuck has matured this season -- not just the character, the whole show. Outside of the Buy More "nerd herd" still being a little to much for me to really like them, I do love how they are making them more than just creepy comic relief. I can actually stand to watch most scenes with Jeff and Lester without feeling nauseated.

Another thing that I love they are doing, however, is evening out the Chuck/Sarah dynamic. As cute as it is to have Chuck be all hopelessly mooning over Sarah, it's such an unequal relationship that it's hard for me to get behind. I have the same problem with the Angela/Hodgins relationship. As Myria put it: The helpless "OMG-I'm-so-in-love-that-I-am-a-complete-idiot" isn't any more attractive on a man than it is a woman. I have hope that it will get better.

The bestest, BESTEST thing about Chuck? They are making him into a proactive character. He's not just doing damage control, trying to run away from everything, being the reactive character we first met. That was totally understandable and believable in the first season (even though I was tired of it by the fifth episode) but it makes Chuck a weaker character the longer it goes on. By having him become active, by having him make choices and decisions separate from the crisis of the week, by him him actively working to obtain his own goals the make Chuck a strong and believable character.

The show is really getting good.
