Thoughts on the Day (7/26):
Jul. 26th, 2004 08:50 pmToday is:
National Coffee Milkshake Day
Bert's Birthday (Sesame Street)
New York becomes a State (1788)
All or Nothing Day
Aunt and Uncle Day
The U.S. Postal Service began on this day in 1775
Happy Birthday, Bert! I never watched much Sesame Street when I was a child for the simple reason that I didn't watch much television. Actually, I remember watching Captain Kanagroo (Yay, Mr. GreenJeans). I even remember watching some of The Electric Company. But not really watching Sesame Street. It may have been on at the wrong time for me to get to watch it, actually.
I have a strange background in children's television. I remember watching Saturday morning cartoons, but only the classics like the Bugs Bunny Show and the OLD Scooby Doo (Die, Scrappy, Die). I have no memory of any of the shows that my husband or friends remember. I feel no loss at this.
All or Nothing Day You know, I'm not real fond of the "all or nothing" attitude. So many things are improved if you aren't obsessing over the fact that someone else may have some of what you could have had. Or, heaven forbid, that someone, somewhere, should have something that you don't have. And, what's worse, is when that attitude is turned on beliefs. You can't say that or do this because I don 't believe in it and your saying that or doing this reminds me that I don't have that belief and it makes me feel bad. 'Cuz you know, when it's all or nothing, most everyone ends up with nothing.
The US Post Office is the brunt of a lot of jokes, some of which may be deserved, but all in the the post office does a hell of a job. A lot of things are blamed on the mail ("I don't understand, sir, I mailed the payment two weeks ago" and "Well, Aunt Marge, I know you were on the list, the Post Office must have lost the wedding invitation") but if you want to send something -- almost anything -- to almost anywhere, there's no better or cheaper way to send it. For a quick recap, check out the USPS site. Of course, the USPS site also has a cool tribute to Lance Armstong, if your interested.
For the record, I don't like coffee milk shakes...
