Is it possible to make Sawyer any more tragic?
I mean, the man does dark, brooding and mournful as well (if not better) than anyone on television, but really! Couldn't the man have one, single happy thing happen to him?
He is living, breathing, walking Shakespearean character. The only thing Hamlet had that this boy doesn't (besides a English accent) is that Hamlet had a true love he could lose. Otherwise... OMG. And in the end, Hamlet only had to deal with a ghost not some mad boar that keeps chasing him through the jungle.
And now Sawyer has this new secret? Like this guy needs any more emotional baggage to carry around. And you just know that not doing the "right thing" -- and trust me Sawyer is very, very aware of exactly what the right things is -- is going to eat him up. Sawyer better not end up telling all in some nifty, heroic death scene or I'm gonna cry.
The one thing that bothers me about them all being on this island (apart from the thought that they may all be dead already and this is just a type of purgatory - and what a rip that would be) is that they won't be able to get off the Island. I'd dearly love to see Sawyer go after the guy who sent him to Australia. Mostly because Sawyer does dangerous really well, too, but also because these people are are learning and growing and discovering nifty new things about themselves. And while getting a chance to do that before being sorted in to an afterlife would be handy, as a viewer I'd much rather see them face their demons in the real world.
Still. Love Sawyer. Even if it is a tragic, broody kind love.

Date: 2005-02-18 03:09 am (UTC)From:As for the voices.... well, it all depends on what the voices are. Both Sayid and Sawyer have been wounded and have heard the voices, so the "infection" thing would work. On the other hand, Jack was wounded, too, and he is voice free. In fact, as far as we know (which is very little really) only Sayid and Sawyer have heard the voices.
If the voices are part of the Island, they may not be intended to be "evil". In this episode, they said the last thing that the guy Sawyer killed said, how could have the bad guys known that? Was the boar just a boar after Sawyer (heh, bad thoughts!) or was it was it Sawyer's guilt about killing the wrong man? If it was a manifestation of guilt, then the voices could be the same. I can't recall if we know what Sayid heard.
I thought Locke's story about the dog was really interesting, because, as usual, he laid out the story in a way to have two answers and let the people he was talking to decided which is the right way to view it. Lock, Man of Mystery.
I think that Sawyer likes having information because it is the one thing that he is looking for: information on the man who caused his family's tragedy.
I think that having this information will get Jack to beat him up at some point, though. Jack is far from level headed when it comes to Sawyer. It will be easy for Sawyer to push Jack's buttons and see how he reacts. Hell, he'll probably lie about it just to really tick Jack off.
I think Sawyer is looking for one good person. When he finds someone who may be that 'good person' he then goes around trying to make them not be a good person. It was easy to do with Sayid and when Jack went along with the torture that pushed Jack into the bad side, too. I'm not sure if Kate counts or not, but he recognizes Kate as someone much like himself, so I don't see him thinking she's 'good person', either.
I think Locke is too damn strange for Sawyer to relate to. Actually, my favorite interaction is between Sawyer and Sayid. There is just so much there.
I'm still not sure if I like Kate or not. She's not as strong a character, IMHO, as the other "gun toters" are. Locke, Sayid, Jack and Sawyer are all people I'd want to have with me, I think I would dump Kate. And I'm not sure if the writers know what they want to do with her? How did she know all about tracking a boar and the wallow and the like and yet know that piglets squeal like that just when they are caught and that Sawyer wasn't hurting it? I'm thinking it was just a stupid writers device to make us all "Oh, ain't she so sweet and sensitive not wanting to hurt the poor itty-bitty piggy" Gah.
I will save for later the fact that 1) you can't catch a little pig that easily (trust me, I've tried) and 2) it would more than likely bring in irate mama pig rather than the boar he was looking for.
I do like Sun. Although I think her husband may know that she can speak English (or at least I think he suspects she can). I really like the actor playing her husband, so I'm hoping for good things to happen to him.
