- Mon, 14:15: Wil started the night shift last night, life needs to adjust to an 11pm - 7am schedule.
Today I am (finally) watching the season finale of Hawaii Five-O. It has sat on my DVR all summer, waiting patiently for me to watch it. And it's not because I know what happens and have been "spoiled". You can't really "spoil" a for me, it's not the plot that makes a show good, its the execution. Knowing what's going to happen won't ruin show for me, because is all in how that plot is played out that makes a show good. It's why I can watch a show more than once.
No, see the reason I haven't watched it yet is that once I do, then it's done. I'd have to wait all summer for a new episode, for the conclusion to the cliffhanger. It's different, you see, when I have a saved episode to watch or when I have a couple of episodes to watch.
I tend to get a little wrapped up in the shows when I actually watch them -- ask any poor soul who's every been forced to watch them with me. Because of that, I like watching a show best when I have two or three episodes watch -- this is especially true with shows that have a major over-arching storyline. I used to do the same damn thing with 24, saving up episodes so I could watch them all in a row without the annoying wait between episodes.
Then, for some reason, waiting a month or so until I have another set of episodes to watch doesn't bother me. I mean, in reality I've gone all summer without a new Hawaii Five-0 episode, but having an unseen episode on the DVR made it seem less stressful.
Hey, I never claimed to make sense.
Oh, and since I've already admitted to this craziness: I still have the last four episodes of last season's Castle to watch. They aren't going to get viewed before tonight's premiere, though. I am watching Castle with Myr and my mom and it's extremely difficult to find a time when it's possible for all of us to get together and watch the show.

- Sun, 14:20: Woo-hoo! Finally got to sit down and turn on the game and WE LEAD! YAY!
- Sun, 14:43: Once again, I stand by my thought that the game should be called the first time the Pack leads. It would make my life much less stressful!
- Sun, 14:50: Who in the world picked these announcers for this game? They are truly terrible! I might as well be listening to the Carolina broadcast!
- Sun, 15:10: Yes! That's what we do, baby! Rodgers to Nelson -- so much awesome!
- Sun, 22:41: How is it that I lived as long as I did without know the awesomeness that is Psych? And when is it coming back?
Rap for Shawn, and GIP
Sep. 18th, 2011 11:50 pmFirst of all GIP. This little picture amuses on many levels -- Myria looked at it and said "Angry, angry little fish". Heh.
For
tvrealm we had to write a rap song for a TV character. I picked Shawn Spencer:
The Spencer Rap
My name is Shawn and I know what you think, I put my hand to my head… No. I don’t need a shrink
I’m a psychic detective, just what’s all the fuss? This here is my partner “Magic Head” Gus.
I solve all the crimes, I astound and bedazzle – I often send Lassie into a frazzle,
Ain’t nothin’ personal, I just need a distraction, to pull the attention away from the action,
I’m sharp and I’m focused, I don’t miss a--
Look, Gus! It’s the frozen yogurt guy! You want to go get two cones? I’d pay but I spent the office petty cash on pretzels last night. Well, Gus, if you don’t want me to spend the petty cash, you shouldn’t hide it under the false bottom on the middle drawer in your desk!
--thing, I can find what's missin' from a shart to a ring,
So bad guys take warning, don’t come to my town, mess with the psych-os and you’re goin’ down!

Sep. 16th, 2011 10:08 amFor
tvrealm we had to "bling" up a picture, using blingee. So I present to you "Marshall Bling".

This is the only landcomm that I'm on right now and it's great fun. I'm on Team Chiller (Crime and Thriller) and we did well last round. It's a very active Team, too, which is a first for me as I've never been part of a team that was really active.

Song of the Week
Sep. 4th, 2011 12:15 amI used to do a "Song of the Week", then all my choices for file sharing dried up and went away. So sad. I'm trying this new one on the off hope that it will be around for a bit.
So now, for a bit, you all can once again marvel at my song choices and understand why no one ever lets me choose the playlist...
I love this song. It's very much who I am and what I think. I believe that things should be used, not put on display. Books should be read, toys should be played with, tools should be used. But then I come from a long line of pragmatic German farmers, so that could be expected.

- Sat, 09:16: Quiet little thunderstorm moving over, with just a gentle rain. The house is dark and silent. It's nice. Off for coffee and chat in 30 min!

- Thu, 15:03: Shopping today, not as productive as we would like, but got some stuff Myr needed.

- Thu, 22:34: Tonight's #burnnotice- AWESOME! Can't wait for next week. Will we really find out who's behind it all? I can't say if I want to or not!

Redemption Falls
Aug. 28th, 2011 09:59 pmFor the landcom
tvrealm we were asked to create a TV show of our own, provide a synopsis and cast the characters. Loving Westerns the way I do, I created a Western. While that isn't surprising, the fact that I cast women as three of the five major characters, should be. I'm really fond of the setup, so I thought I'd share my idea with you all!
The year is 1885 and in the Wyoming Territory the town of Redemption Falls is facing the difficult transition from an isolated outpost to booming railroad hub. The new influx of easterners bring with them money and business, but also laws and societal rules that war with the established life of the western town. It’s into that turmoil that Charlotte O’Shea returns. She’d left the town ten years before, sent back to her family home in Charleston to convalesce from Cholera and to mourn the death of her young daughter. She had been surviving on the last of her family’s money and reputation and just when both were running out, she receives word that her estranged husband has died, leaving behind a large ranch. With no other options, she takes the train to Redemption Falls, looking to quickly sell the Lazy O Ranch and to escape back to her home in Charleston.
But Redemption Falls holds more than painful and tragic memories, and Charlotte’s life is about to become as conflicted and turbulent as the town she is going to.

So.. do I just fail at being a mother?
Aug. 6th, 2011 10:45 pmThere are times when I'm thinking I'm taking this "I'm the mom, I need to be protective" not quite seriously enough.
The setting: Myria (who will be in college this year and who is currently 18) wants to take a short trip with two of her girlfriends. They want to go to a small town about 3 hours away where there's this little (supposedly haunted) hotel. There's little arts and crafty shops that they can go to.
I thought it sounded fun.
All the other parents are, ah, less than enthused about it. The trip is on the verge of being cancelled all the time.
I mean, I understand the parental concerns. Driving on the highways, three young girls alone, older cars and all. I watch the news, I'm not naive, here. But...
I know these girls. They are good and smart and, well, NOT STUPID. Yes, I know that bad things happen. I know that there are bad drivers and bad people out there... But they all have phones. They will have a GPS. Russell lives in La Crosse, which is close to where they are going. I can hop in a car and DRIVE to where they will be in 3 hours.
I mean, I am wrong for thinking she should do this? Am I not being protective or concerned enough? I'm planning on getting her a "war bag" that has the stuff she needs for an emergency, making sure she has her phone and charger, telling her to be smart and all. But it's a in-state trip, after all.
Yeah, it would be different if they were heading to Chicago or the like. If any of them would be into partying or hanging out with the "wrong crowd" it could be different. If they were heading out into dangerous territory with no phone or GPS or driving a car that was, well, like the one I drive, I might think differently. If they weren't smart and, more importantly, cautious, then maybe I'd think twice about it.
I keep thinking that I'm missing something. That I'm not doing my parently duty by thinking that this would be a fun trip for her, and for letting her go. Should I be more concerned about this? Am I not doing what I should?

- Fri, 16:00: I don't get the Smurfs. Perhaps I was the wrong age, maybe I just don't like blue, could be I like real words, I just don't get it.

Signal Boost: Return of the DDoS

"For those wanting to know more about the recent DDoS attacks, yes, it looks like it was the Russian government trying to shut down the dissidents again.
As I said last time, while it's frustrating not to have access, LJ is a lot more than a social network platform. From the article:
"LiveJournal isn’t just a social network. It’s also a platform for organizing civic action. Dozens of network projects and groups mobilize people to solve specific problems — from defending the rights of political prisoners to saving endangered historic architecture in Moscow."
So while I know many are considering the move over to Dreamwidth and other such sites, supporting LJ is a way we can help support those who use it for more than a writing/roleplaying/social venue.
Also, as a FYI, LJ is giving paid users effected by the outage two weeks of paid time as compensation. "

- Tue, 17:27: Re: corps/people who have more $ than US Treasury. Maybe everyone who has more $ than debts should forfeit their $ so the gov't looks good.
- Tue, 17:34: Waiting at the WI Valley Fair for the Beach Boys to play. Got her early so we got in for only $5 each. Awesome!
- Tue, 17:43: Last time I was at this fair, it was with @Finabair to see Weird Al. I also saw the Nitty Gritty Dirt band here, ayears ago.
- Tue, 18:39: Its hot, MUGGY, but the occasional breeze is nice. There's a couple beach balls bounncing around the stand providing a friendly distraction.
- Tue, 19:57: Used to be lighters were held up, now that no one carries kighter, everyone uses cell phones!
- Tue, 20:11: Myr: "What are you texting? Live in the moment!" Silly child, how does the world know I'm living in the moment, if I don't twitter!
- Tue, 21:36: Beach Boys were great. Sang and danced. It was FUN.
- Wed, 00:13: Too tired to think. Myr was right, I should have been in bed an hour ago. Good night, twitterverse!
- Mon, 15:37: Monogrammed soap for $13 a bar. If this seems like a reasonable expense, you live in a totally different than I.
- Mon, 22:30: You may threaten or call me names, insult my intelligence, upbringing or heritage, but you can't bully me into voting against my conscience.
So, Myr gets a call at from her friends saying that they would pick her up for an "adventure". I ask where they're going and Myr goes: "Who knows? It's 10 pm on a Sunday night. Nothing's open." Heh. She's right about that.
Anyhow she gets picked up, she's back in 10 minutes, to get her own car -- it seems one of the three on the adventure had to cut it short. Anyhow, her and A are "going out somewhere to walk in the fog".
I totally love my child.
Anyhow, as she's going out I toss her a small flashlight, telling her to take it with her. She rolls her eyes and says that there isn't anyone going to be out at this time of night. I inform her I'm not worried about people, but a flashlight's handy if you happen to drop something in the dark.
"Yes, Mother." It's her standard response when she's humoring me.
"Hey," I say as she's leaving, "if I was worried about people, I'd have you take my leatherman."
I'm sure she said something else as she was leaving, but I was deliberately not paying attention. *grin*
Have I mentioned that I love my child?
