Title: A First Time
Fandom: Burn Notice
Characters: Sam Axe
Genre: Gen
Rating: PG
Word Count: 150
Warnings/Spoilers: None
Disclaimer: Fanfic, for fun, not profit.

Sam had woken up after being kidnapped before. It was the first time, however, he’d woken up in the bed of a 4-star hotel room. He was naked (not the first time) but not tied up (which was new). There was a bottle of champagne next to the bed (first time for that) and an armed guard (not the first time).

He sat up, carefully covering what needed to be covered (first time having a down-filled duvet) and couldn’t get an answer from the taciturn guard (typical). He toyed with the idea of making a fight of it, nude or not, (wouldn’t be the first time) but decided to wait and see what happened (first time choosing that option).

It would either be very bad (like many times before) or very good (for once).

He was willing to take the chance. There was a first time for everything, after all.

Because I'm totally insane, I'm joining a bunch more LAS communities. And by a bunch I mean four. Well, that is a lot when you consider that it's all WRITING.

If you think you'd be interested in them, check them out. More fic is always good!

Scenes ) You don't have to write a whole story, just a scene. I'm interested in seeing how this works.

Ficlet ) Ficlets are at least 2000 words, which will let me write a few of those stories that would be short changed in the other LAS comms. And we get three weeks to write! *shifty look* Yes I know I will probably end up writing it the day it's due, but the option is there.

Five Times ) I'm not sure about this one as I've only written one "Five Times fic" and most of the ones out there are shippy and you know me and ships. But I'll give it a try, mostly because it doesn't have a word limit and I'm in love with things without word limits!

Drabble ) Write a drabble - 100 words only. And you only get a week, which is unfortunate because I think drabbles are harder to write than long fic. But I suppose I always wait until it due to write, so it really doesn't matter.

And it's the Packers. Packers' football, baby!

I grew up in Wisconsin, live there still. I love Packer football. Actually, I love this time of year with playoff football, it's just better when the Packers are involved.

And today is a good day to be a Packer fan.

We've been playing "Do or Die" games for the past three weeks. And we've been doing. Aaron Rodgers is doing a great job of playing solid, steady football. Clay Mathews is still awesome. We had a young player step up and have a stellar game. We've kept low-key and focused on the game, rather than off-field antics. We're a small damn market and even a smaller town for the game to be played in. It keeps the stupidity down. I like that.

Next we face a Falcons. It's an uphill battle. A team we lost to once already this year. But it's still anyone's game.

My favorite quote of the day is from Mike Greeny (from ESPNs Mike & Mike in the Morning). They were talking about why the spread in the game only has the Falcons up by 2. Home field advantage should give them 3, coming off a bye-week and beating the Pack earlier in the season should add at least another 4 or 5, maybe even more. But the biggest determination on spread is how people are betting, and people are betting on the Packers. Greeny's explination: I think all of America is falling in love with Green Bay.

What I like about that is it isn't about thinking that the team is unbeatable. It's not about any one superstar. It's not about hype. It's not even about thinking that the Packers will win against the Falcons. It's just about the love of the team... The little guy. The one who doesn't give up. The one who might just surprise us all. The one who is just good enough to win, but isn't really expected to.

Yeah, I know. But I'm a fan and this one of my fandoms. I get to be this way.

Go, Pack, Go!

As I mentioned in my last post, I put a bunch of fic up on ff.net and AO3.

Boy is that a distracting thing to do. I suck at reviewing, I suck even more at responding to reviews. But I think that I should at least acknowledge a kind word. *gah* I like the "kudos" button at AO3, but I don't really need every "kudo" notice sent to my in box. It's nice, but not needed. And, over at ff.net, they have to learn that the "completed" button means that the story is done and not to ask for more. Although I guess it's nice to know that if I had written more, it would have been appreciated. Actually, there are two fics out there that I do want to continue, so I suppose its not a completely whack request.

It amuses me that at ff.net, when I do an author search for "Partly" I don't show up, but if I do an author search for "Part" I'm in the list. Heh. In fact, if you search for "partl" I don't show up either. Weird.

Of course, all that stuff means that I'm not writing new stuff. Odd how that works.

I was reading through my flist and ran across several year-end fic memes where people talked about the fic they wrote this year. Usually, I skim the lists and wish I had written enough to do one. Then it occurred to me that I may have done so.

To my surprise, I cam up with this year-long total of 39 fics. This includes drabbles, but I also think that I may be leaving off a fic or two.

How could that be, you ask? It turns out that I write fic for comms or contests but never get around to posting them. Of those 39 fic, I'd say only half are any place that I could actually link to them. I'm working on changing that, but it actually requires more effort than you would think.

Anyhow, once they are all up where everyone can read them, I'll do the complete meme. However, just because I really find it hard to believe that I actually wrote this much, I'm doing a summary:

Total fics:
39

By Word Count: I wrote most of these on a 1000 word limit
100 (drabbles): 5
101-1000: 24
1001-5000: 6
5001+: 1

By Fandom -- It turns out I'm a totally multi-fandom girl
Crossovers (Not listed separately): 14
24: 1
Bones: 1
Leverage: 1
Walking Dead: 1
White Collar: 6
Burn Notice: 7
Supernatural: 8

I've also come to the conclusion that I really need a beta reader. While most of my fics have been for competitions and I can't have them betaed before I post them there, I should really have them betaed before I put them someplace else. I suck at line editing.

It's a good enough total, really. I'm hoping it's better next year.

You know the scene in "It's a wonderful life", when George Bailey realizes that there's no way out of the hole he's in? When he realizes that no matter how hard he tries or works or manages things, there's no getting out? That it's just not getting better?

I'm really tired of being stuck at that spot. I'm ready for the next part of the movie, where everything turns around and the hole is filled and life is set on the path to okay again.

Really. Any time now...

I don't say it often, because I think it usually makes me sound foolish, but I really like the fic I wrote for Yuletide. I had my main assignment and then I grabbed a pinch hit. I like how both of them worked out.

Of course, I've learned long ago that what I like doesn't always translate to what others like. So, I'm rather nervous. The last thing I wrote for Yuletide (many moons ago) was well received and you would think that would make me less antsy. No such luck.

Well, I'm not going to be around much today and tomorrow, so I'll have to wait and see!

For the season I give you a short drabble I wrote a while ago, in honor of joy and wonder:

A Wintry World

The sky raged with snow, as if stirred by an all-powerful hand. At the apex of the storm nothing could be seen but swirling flecks of white. The storm waned and small houses could be glimpsed as the heavy flakes slowed and settled.

A scene evolved from the chaos. A tiny hamlet of houses, brightly decorated with snow covered awnings and dark evergreen trees. The last of the snow drifted to the ground, peace reigned.

A small child clapped and laughed, wonder and joy filled the small sounds. “More, p’ease. More!”

The mother smiled and shook the snow globe again.

So glad to see you are being part of Yuletide! Thank you for writing a story for me. Please have fun because that’s why we write, right?

I love my shows )

TL:DR version: I want fanfic to fit into the tale that was told on TV or the big screen. I want more of the characters I fell in love with. Canon is a good, good thing. Friendship is the only ship that interests me because it’s the basis of everything else.

Recently I got a comment on a fic that said it was "competence porn". That is what I love in fic. I want my characters to be competent. Not perfect. Not always right. But competent. Good at what they're good at. Not stupid. Not inane. Not bully-ish. I like my characters to be competent versions of who they are.

I like characters who are smart and strong and flawed and gloriously human. The characters I like may do stupid things, but they are never stupid.

ETA: And I love, LOVE, LOVE crossovers. As long as the main focus of the crossover is a fandom I love, I don't care what show it's crossed over with. Of course, keeping in mind my complete and total love of cannon, this can prove a challenge. But the whole "outsider POV" is made so much more interesting when the "outsider" is someone we know.

Thank you!

Posted at the top of my journal because I only linked my journal and not a post. It will disappear in a bit.

This idea was stolen from everyone!

What you do is take the first sentence from the first entry of every month of the 2010. I added two things this year: the title of the post (in italics). I start a lot of my posts in the title. I left it off last year, but I thought I’d it this time, just for fun. Also I put my total number of post I had in the month in (--) after the first line. I omitted all my twitter posts because they just don’t count in this! After all statistics are evilfun!

January: First Post! Welcome to 2010! (3)

February: White Collar I love everything about this show. (11)

March: Thoughts for the morning...Sunshine, calm winds and thoughts of spring are not quite enough to make a long sleeved-tee shirt warm in the 30 degree outdoors... but I'll toss on a sweatshirt and in a couple of hours it will be 40+ and then, then it will be spring. (5)

April: There is no plan B, YAY! Of all the movies coming out this year, I most want to see "The A-Team". (7)

May: Midnight movie! Because I had to be up on the dark side of six am, I didn't stop to make a post when I got home last night. (11)

June: Writer's Block: Oh no not I I'm not qualified to answer this question. (19)

July: Meme Lemming: 30 Days of TV - 04 Day 04 - Your favorite show ever -- Ha ha ha ha. Ha ha ha ha. (10)

August: GIP I finally got an A-Team icon made. (10)

September: White Collar Rocks I got around to watching Tuesday's White Collar. (13)

October: Fic: Human (SPN, PG) Brain dead people didn’t open their eyes and talk. (15)

November: GIP This is totally not the icon I set out to make today. (8)

December : Playing Catch Up I haven't posted here for a while. (6 - as of this post!)
