And it's the Packers. Packers' football, baby!

I grew up in Wisconsin, live there still. I love Packer football. Actually, I love this time of year with playoff football, it's just better when the Packers are involved.

And today is a good day to be a Packer fan.

We've been playing "Do or Die" games for the past three weeks. And we've been doing. Aaron Rodgers is doing a great job of playing solid, steady football. Clay Mathews is still awesome. We had a young player step up and have a stellar game. We've kept low-key and focused on the game, rather than off-field antics. We're a small damn market and even a smaller town for the game to be played in. It keeps the stupidity down. I like that.

Next we face a Falcons. It's an uphill battle. A team we lost to once already this year. But it's still anyone's game.

My favorite quote of the day is from Mike Greeny (from ESPNs Mike & Mike in the Morning). They were talking about why the spread in the game only has the Falcons up by 2. Home field advantage should give them 3, coming off a bye-week and beating the Pack earlier in the season should add at least another 4 or 5, maybe even more. But the biggest determination on spread is how people are betting, and people are betting on the Packers. Greeny's explination: I think all of America is falling in love with Green Bay.

What I like about that is it isn't about thinking that the team is unbeatable. It's not about any one superstar. It's not about hype. It's not even about thinking that the Packers will win against the Falcons. It's just about the love of the team... The little guy. The one who doesn't give up. The one who might just surprise us all. The one who is just good enough to win, but isn't really expected to.

Yeah, I know. But I'm a fan and this one of my fandoms. I get to be this way.

Go, Pack, Go!

It came to me again yesterday that football could really be considered my first fandom. To be specific, I suppose I’d have to say that Packer Football is my first fandom, but I love football as a whole and will watch games and cheer for teams when my beloved Packers aren’t involved at all, so I think I can go with the generic “Football Fandom”.

Fans are fans. I’m always perplexed when one set of fans belittles another. I’ve heard people standing around in Packer jerseys and wearing cheeseheads talk disparagingly about fans who dress up for Star Wars or LOTR. But then again I’ve been at SciFi cons where the whole point of a panel was to diss the “red-neck sports fans” and talk about how much cooler us “geeks” are.

It’s something I notice, I suppose, because I live in two worlds and love both of them. I fit equally well into each group. It’s not an act, either. I love passion and fans are passionate. I find so much more joy in cheering and celebrating than I do in pointing and ridiculing.

Besides I love a good party and the Super Bowl is always good for a good party. Granted it’s not a three-day stay in a hotel surrounded by hundreds of like-minded fans, but it doesn’t require travelling or paying an admission fee either. So it works out.

In reality, football fandom has really taught me a great deal. I’ve learned to deal with prima donnas whose celebrity status threatens my enjoyment of the game (see icon). I’ve learned to deal with unexpected plot developments that I didn’t like (ie any game we lost, especially the two losses to Minnesota this year!). I’ve learned how to stay friends with those who have different views about the sport (what do you mean, you’re a Dallas fan?). It was the first place that I learned about creating fanfic (just wait until next year – we’ll go all the way!) I’ve learned how not to let other people’s rants ruin my squee. I've learned that just because you rant about something doesn't mean you don't love it. I’ve learned how to balance my desires for victory against the fact that I have no control over anything that goes on in the field. I’ve learned to enjoy other fans joy and understand other fans heartbreak.

Would I have liked it better if the Pack was bringing the Lombardi Trophy back home? Damn straight. But I think the most important thing being a sports fan has taught me is how to enjoy something I love even when it doesn’t turn out the way I want it to.

Besides, there’s always next year.

Trying not to watch the Packer game or care so much if they win. If they do win its HOME FIELD advantage for the whole play offs... and we haven't lost a play off game at home. Ever. On the other hand if we lose, it's the Superbowl through Philly. ARGH!

Trying not to obsess over the fact that JennJenn isn't up nor has she called. She may not be up today at all. Or she may just be coming up late. Or she may not be here until Mon or Tue... argh! I like knowing things once in a while. Like if we should eat or if I should make plans to wait 'till she gets here. Plus I have a TTT free pass that I need to use before the first. I could go tonight if I thought she wasn't coming up right away or if she's not coming until late Mon....

I'm trying not to tweak this fic I am writing to death. Which is hard when I'm trying not to obsess over those other aforementioned items. Plus I'm not sure if tweaking it mostly to death wouldn't be a good idea. I'm working with a fairly subtle thought in it.

I'm trying not to be distracted by my family and LJ (not working right now, as you can tell) and the work that needs to be done around the house. And on that thought, I'll head back to writing. I'm hoping to post it to NovelTry tonight. Even if it is a fanfic.. Heh.
